This presentation wil be a group presentation on the theme of the American family based on the material we studied in Chapter 4 of Noteworthy. You and your partner will conduct a survey on the American family and then report the results to the class in a 10-minute presentation.  Your presentation should include a PowerPoint slideshow and graphs from Microsoft Excel to accompany the lecture.  The topics you should cover in your presentation are:
  • the statistics on the family you collected based on  your survey
  • Attitudes about the family based on your survey
Step 1:  Meet with your partner.

You will be assigned a partner for this presentation.  Meet with your partner and decide on what part of the presentation each person will prepare.

_______________________  Conclusion

Step 2: Conduct the survey

You will need to give the survey to 20 people.   Click here to get the survey form and print out 20 copies.  Both partners should be involved in conducting the survey. You may pick friends, relatives, or fellow students at Georgia Perimeter to fill out the survey form. However, please do NOT give the survey to someone in this class.  Also, do not give the survey to two people in the same family.  A good way to conduct the survey is to go to the student lounge and give it to people there.  The survey forms should be finished by Thursday, August 1.

Step 3: Compile the survey data and make charts in Microsoft Excel

Now that you have collected your data, you need to organize and examine it.  Using Microsoft Excel (see worksheet for using Microsoft Excel ), you can enter your data and then make charts to use in your Power Point Presentation. You will have six charts in all (three in Subtopic 1 and three in Subtopic 2).  They are:

ST1  Changes in the American family (Comparison of Respondents' Family with Mother's Family)
  • Chart 1:  Type of Family
  • Chart 2:  # of children
  • Chart 3:  Work outside of the home
ST2  Attitudes about the American family
  • Chart 4: Strength of the family (20 years ago vs. 50 years ago)
  • Chart 5: Problems facing the family (comparison between families of immigrants and families of native-born Americans)
  • Chart 6:  Problems facing the family (comparison between 18-25 year olds and 30-50 year olds).
Step 4:  Make a Power Point Presentation

Now that you have organized your data and made your charts, you are ready to make a Power Point Presentation to present your statistics and make a solid presentation.  Remember to create an interesting introduction, as well as a strong conclusion that makes solid points about the data you have collected.  Don't just present the data, analyze it and make good conclusions.

Step 5:  Rehearse your Presentation

Don't forget to practice the verbal part of your presentation using your notes and standing in front of a mirror.  You can also time yourself.  Make sure you are using good connecting words and are speaking clearly and at appropriate volume.
