Information

George Herman Ruth was born on February 6, 1895 and passed away August 16, 1948. Many people called him Babe Ruth and he also went by the nicknames, "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat." He is considered the greatest baseball player ever by many people. He was one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and he was the first player to hit over 50 home runs in one season. His record of 60 home runs in the 1927 season stood for 34 years until it was broken by Roger Maris with 61 home runs in 1961. He was with the Red Soxs from 1914 to 1919. He was then sold to the Yankees in 1920, which would prove to be a mistake for the Red Soxs, as they did not win another World Series for 86 years. In 1923 Yankee stadium was opened. Ruth hit the stadium's first home run, and sportswriter Fred Lieb nicknamed Yankee Stadium "The House That Ruth Built." Babe was a member of the original American League All-Star team in 1933. Babe Ruth hit an amazing 714 runs in his baseball career and has only been passed by Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds. In 1998, The Sporting News named Ruth as Number One in its list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players." In 1999, Ruth was elected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team in fan balloting. Ruth's birthplace has been preserved as a combination Babe Ruth and Baltimore Orioles museum.
