Stratford - 1999 season

Stratford debut: Theseus in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Male Guest in Pride and Prejudice and appears in Richard II. A member of the inaugural Stratford Festival Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training and the Young Company.

Jonathan hails from Bowmanville, Ontario. His professional career began at the Banff Centre in Reaney's Donnelly trilogy where he played a variety of roles, most significantly that of a cart-horse. He is thrilled to reprise his stallion in this season's Pride and Prejudice, though he prefers western saddle. After a Rocky Mountain High he sprinted about the Bathurst Street Theatre in The Complete Works of Willm Shkspr (Abridged), and then loved a season at the Georgian Theatre Festival. He aspires to perform in a five act epic play where snowboarding is central to the plot. He would like to thank his fellow "conservatoryites", teachers and actors. And a special thank you to his family from whom he learns the big stuff.

Stratford - 2000 season

Second season: Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof, Oliver in As You Like It and appears in Patience.

Jonathan proudly hails from Bowmanville, Ontario, which birthed his love of village folk, wide open spaces, farm smells, small stores and big dreams. He also credits his high school extracurricular drama, in particular its directors, with fostering his love of theatre and theatre for the love of it. He took some classes at the University of Waterloo and managed to slip away for student matinees at the Stratford Festival, before taking up studies in Montreal at the National Theatre School. His professional career began at the Banff Centre in Reaney's Donnelly trilogy, where he played a variety of roles. He went "wacky" in The Complete Works of Willm Shkspr (Abridged) for almost a year and then went on to the Georgian Theatre Festival before returning to Stratford. Jonathan was part of the inaugural season of the Stratford Festival Conservatory for Classical Theatre Training. Much love to friends and family. To everyone he says, "Drink L'chaim to life!"

Stratford - 2001 season

Third season: Hotspur in Henry IV, Part 1, Fang/Wart in Falstaff (Henry IV, Part 2) and Roger Tassett in Tempest-Tost.

Jonathan is a native of the mighty town of Bowmanville, where he got his theatrical start playing the Sundance Kid in an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet aptly called Juliet and the Sundance Kid. Three things happened: he fell in love with theatre, with Shakespeare and with being a cowboy. Fortunately 14 years later, his professional career began in the Wild West with James Reaney's Donnelly Trilogy at the Banff Centre. After a serious Rocky Mountain high, he romped around Toronto in The Complete Works of Willm Shkspr (Abridged), then splashed in Georgian Bay at the Georgian Theatre Festival before landing in beautiful Stratford for the inaugural Conservatory and the 1999 season. After playing many of the good, the bad and the ugly of stage folk, some favourites include the title role in Macbeth, Leontes in The Winter's Tale and Malvolio in Twelfth Night. He would like to thank his family, friends, teachers, fellow actors and Douglas Street for love and support. "The Sundance continues."

Stratford - 2002 season

Fourth season: Earl of Suffolk in Henry VI: Revenge in France, Jack Cade in Henry VI: Revolt in England and Theseus in The Two Noble Kinsmen.

Jonathan hails from the fine town of Bowmanville (pronounced "bmvil") where he picked many strawberries, goat-herded a touch, rode the ice floes and daydreamed. When a pack of theatre-minded teachers and his jazzy clown father infused a little dress-up into his life, a love of theatre was born. This love has taken him to many beautiful places in this great land, most recently to Calgary to play Septimus in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia with Theatre Junction. Though he threw an embarrassing tantrum upon leaving the mountains, he is loving his fourth season with the Festival. He made a bid for English power last year as Hotspur in Henry IV and makes a couple more this year in Henry VI before getting "cut off." Much love to friends, his awesome family, A.D., Chewy and anyone else who gets this message. "P.S. Power to the imagination."

Stratford - 2003 season

Fifth season: Tranio in The Taming of the Shrew, Pericles in The Adventures of Pericles and Costard in Love's Labour's Lost.

For the first 19 years of life, Jonathan jogged around the fine town of Bowmanville, spending most of his time investigating "haunted" houses, micro-surfing at the weird beach and exploring the jungle (B-ville ravine). He then extended his experiments in imagination and make-believe in the theatre. This has taken him to the mountains of Banff, the shores of Georgian Bay and dozens of places in between. He had not played Toronto since the outrageous Complete Works of Wllm Shkspr six years ago, but was recently seen there in The Laramie Project with Studio 180. Favourite roles include Septimus in Arcadia, Hotspur in Henry IV, Leontes in The Winter's Tale, Suffolk and Cade in Henry VI, the title role in the Scottish play and sharing the stage with his Dad, which, in a way, has just begun. "Much love to all, to theatre, and life." Jonathan would also like to invite the audience snowboarding any time they're free.

Stratford - 2004 season

Sixth season: Oberon/Theseus in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Philip the Bastard in King John.

Jonathan's roots lie deep in the waters of Bowmanville Creek, which runs through his hometown. After 18 years of make-believing in, over and down that creek, he became addicted to playing. Since that time, he has spent considerable time onstage and outdoors in beautiful places across the country. Favourites onstage include Arcadia with Theatre Junction, the Donnelly trilogy at Banff Centre, The Laramie Project with Studio 180, The Winter's Tale at the National Theatre School, Macbeth at Waterloo, Strawberries in January at the Grand and Henry IVs, Henry VIs, The Two Noble Kinsmen, Richard II and The Adventures of Pericles at Stratford. Favourites offstage include bikes, rocks, snowboards, gravity and, newly discovered, surfing. So you may catch him at the point break of the Avon River this summer. "Thank you" to everyone who has taught and supported him, given him a wink and reminded him that magic exists.

Stratford - 2005 season

Seventh season: Dmitry in The Brothers Karamazov, Valentine Xavier in Orpheus Descending and Angelo in Measure for Measure.

Jonathan originally did some growing up in the town of Bowmanville and returned there this winter while working on The Company Theatre's inaugural production, A Whistle in the Dark. The play was extraordinary to work on and living with his Mum was pretty great as well. In his time at Stratford, he has journeyed with many lovely actors, artisans, characters and plays. In particular: Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof, Hotspur in Henry IV, Jack Cade in Henry VI, Pericles in The Adventures of Pericles and the Bastard in King John (which, strangely, has stuck as a nickname). While life in a black box has been beautiful, he is also a little obsessed with earth, rocks, wind and water and any sport with a board involved. "Love to Mum, Dad, beautiful AD, six nieces and nephews, their parents and you."

Stratford - 2007 season

Eighth season: Iago in Othello and Leo Katz in Pentecost. Associate Artist of the Stratford Festival of Canada.

Jonathan is deeply tickled to return to Stratford after an exhilarating year on the road, which included stops in London, Hamilton, Toronto, Winnipeg, Mexico and, most recently, St. John's. It was there he toured with the Company Theatre's production of A Whistle in the Dark. He returns to Stratford a little wiser, quite married (and very happy) and no less convinced of the extraordinary power of a play. Previous lives in theatre include Val in Orpheus Descending, Edmund in King Lear, Pericles in The Adventures of Pericles, Hotspur in Henry IV, Philip in King John, Jack Cade in Henry VI, Dmitry in The Brothers Karamazov, Roger Tasset in Tempest-Tost, Costard in Love's Labour's Lost and Theseus in The Two Noble Kinsmen. He recently directed Michael O'Brien's Mad Boy Chronicle for Fanshaw College and had a roar doing it. He sends love and gratitude to his growing family old and new, and especially to beautiful Adrienne for saying yes. E lei no au i ko aloha.
