Fae
Welcome friend, sit down and chat with me.
The world of the dreaming is a rough place- so drab and bleak. This place makes
me miss my home more and more every day. But alas, this is our home now, and I
suppose all we can do is defend this, our last stronghold.
I am Tak, a Dark Fae. I used to be called a
Satyr, but after we came through the Rift to the Dreaming, out forms ended up
being a bit more mundane and now you can’t tell any of us apart. We Dark Fae
live in the woods here. We used to live out with the other fae, but the city
world is drab and depressing and the in fighting is even worse.
Once long ago we lived in the land of Faerie
where everything was bright and colorful, the world oozed magic, and what
humankind viewed as impossibilities were everyday occurrences. Those days are
gone now. We were driven from our home by the beasts of technology. Their
golems, beast of steel and iron, forged into the shape of man. It is said they
made their way into the great labyrinth, imprisoning our immortal king. Now our
great land, once an endless forest, is a desolate desert or mines, trains, and
other steam work abominations. It is less our world now then theirs. After the
invasion many of our kind died. Those of us who survived escaped through the
Rifts to the Dreaming only to fight amongst ourselves. The remaining races,
elemental, guarders, and guiders sought to destroy each other.
And then there were our cousins in the Waking
World. About the same time that the Dark Sides began their descent into our
homeland, the Waking World was tinkering with the same tools that the Dark Fae
had invented. Steam work, strip mining, great clockwork beasts that reaped the
earth and ripped its bones out of the screaming ground. The Waking World is
black and white now- we called this loss of color the Great Fade. Mortals still
see the color for some reason, but I don’t think it’s there, not like it used
to be. And with color faded magic, our very lifeblood. It was too sad to stay.
So they left.
The elemental Fae made up most of the
citizens of our world. They had power to shape and change the land, creating
mighty rivers, endless mountains, and breathtaking gardens. Now they seem to do
little more then use their blessed gifts to cause pain and suffering.
The Guarder Fae were once the kings most
trusted servants. They were given the duty to protect our land from invaders.
Their failure only drove them into madness, they are no longer the blessed
knights of the Fae, but are bloodthirsty cannibals distrusting of everyone and
everything.
And then there is the Guider Fae, the only
members of our species deserving of pity really. They were the only ones who
could navigate the great maze, essential for anyone to see the Green Man, our
king. They also had another purpose, bringing the souls of humanity to the
afterlife. Honestly I believe this last part was just myth. I mean if there was
truly a land of paradise, and they knew how to get there, then why are we in
the dreaming? But I digress... As I was saying, they could navigate the great
maze and reach the throne of our king. It was they who were tricked into
bringing the Golem army to our liege. It is a shame they have never lived down.
And where do us Dark Fae fit in? We used to
belong to the other Fae races, and some races long dead, but we were driven out
of Fae society. We became disgusted with the way our own people, and the people
of this world were acting, so we choose to live on our own. It was a rough
decision, but at least we didn’t walk the path of the Gremlins.
Who are Gremlins?
Such betrayals are too dishonorable to
discuss. I think it’s time you left.
