| Why NOT To Put Much Faith in The Weather Channel's Forecasts | ||||
| TWC (The Weather Channel) is the largest weather-based corporation in the world. TV channels, radio stations, internet sites galore. But alas, TWC does NOT bring you the most accurate forecasts. Think of how many times you've turned it on TWC and saw a chance of Snow for our area, only to turn it back on 6 hours later to find they took that chance out. Here's why this happens: The weather computer models (models that help predict the weather for the next 16 days based on climate analysis, etc) run 4 times a day, every day, 365 days a year. Perhaps the most notoriously unreliable model is called the GFS. Professional forecasters around the world know that the GFS is WRONG more than 50% of the time. Well, for some reason, TWC forecasts come DIRECTLY from what the GFS model depicts. The GFS seems to change the weather forecast with every run, thus explaining why TWC's forecasts change so much. Now, I'll admit, TWC HAS made some improvements as of late, and they have directed more HUMAN attention to weather forecasts, and that is a good thing. But, until they stop using the GFS model, TWC's forecasts will never be accurate and reliable. Furthermore, the GFS is MOST un-trustworthy when forecasting winter weather. It ALWAYS seems to overexaggerate everything, including where snow may fall, and how much. My message to you: Do NOT get excited over a TWC forecast, because it will probably end up wrong. This is especially true when dealing with winter weather, because the GFS simply does NOT handle winter weather well at all.. |
