Jonathan proposed to Meredith on December 24, 2005 (Christmas Eve). The day before he had gone to Meredith's father's nursing home where Jonathan asked for permission to have his daughter's hand in marriage. Her father was so taken aback by this gesture that he was brought to tears- he told Jonathan congratulations and gave him his blessing. The next day, Jonathan started out by surprising Meredith by coming home from work two hours early. They had been planning to go to a Christmas party later that night, so Jonathan told her that he came home early so that they could arrive at the party a little earlier than they had originally planned. This was fine, however, Meredith thought she would have had more time to get ready, and now, suddenly, they were leaving in a few minutes! (She had been cleaning house all day and running errands and had not even showered!) As Jonathan changed into nicer attire, Meredith ran around the house trying to get everything done. As she frantically tried to hurry past Jonathan while they were standing in the kitchen, he gently stopped her and asked (in the cutest voice) "Do you have a second?"...That was when she realized what he was doing! She couldn't believe what was happening, she thought for sure she would have been able to predict when he would ask her to marry him, but NOPE -- he definitely caught her off guard and got the surprise that he wanted! It turned out that most of the people in Meredith's family had seen the ring a few days prior, so everyone knew it was coming except her! Here she was, looking her absolute worst, standing in the kitchen and having Jonathan stare at her so lovingly...as if she was perfect just the way she was! He explained how much she meant to him and then got down on one knee and asked her if she would be his wife --of course she said YES!!!
