Fun For All The Family
Three miles to the ground, Thjorska flicked on his limbs and
forcebubble. He hit the ground at a run, the forcebubble absorbing the
impact and leaving a small crater in the tarmac. The other Beserkers
followed suit, but Ship's did a little loop-de-loop and landed gently
on one foot, firing thrusters to slow her descent.
"Show off," Thjorska said. Ship's face appeared in the top right
of the monitor in front of his face and stuck her tongue out.
"So what? I like to show off," she said, grinning.
Pitrak appeared in the top-left of the screen, an exasperated look
on his face.
"Entrance this way," he rumbled, his Beserker pointing a long arm.
Thjorska nodded, and switched on the public broadcast.
"Everyone switch to the public channel. We don't want anyone
getting lost on this mission. OK?"
The rest of the team registered their agreement on the comm, and
Thjorska pushed his Beserker into gear. It lifted a foot, and then
began to walk slowly to the entrance.
A large smiling face greeted them at the entrance. It was a huge,
holographic sign, but a forcefield barred entry. Thjorska grunted. It
was to be expected, as the park hadn't opened yet.
"Ship? A little help?"
"Okay!" Ship said, and moved her Beserker towards the gate. A
split second later the forcefield disappeared, and the smiling face
spoke.
"Welcome to MEGA-SHUJO-HAPPY-HAPPY-LAND! We be of honour to meet
you, happy-happy Ship and friends! All your fun are belong to us! Take
off all fun! Someone set us up the fun! Hyah! Welcome! Welcome!
Welcome!"
"Very funny, Ship," Thjorska said, hearing Ship's musical giggle
over the comm. "No more fun, got that?"
"You heard the sign! We have to have fun!" Ship giggled, and walked
into the park.
Thjorska sighed and signalled the rest to follow. Just in case, he
armed his weapons.
As they walked under the sign, the systems on his Beserker began
to fail. He pounded the buttons, but to no avail. The glow in them
died, leaving him motionless.
"Shax! Damn this! Ship, what's going on!"
"Umm... I don't know!" She wailed, bursting into tears. "I'm
usually so good with this! I just can't figure out what happened!"
The hood of her Beserker flipped open, and she sat on the rim,
sobbing uncontrollably. Thjorska flipped his open and leapt across to
her.
"Don't cry!" He soothed, patting her on the back. "It wasn't your
fault!"
Ship looked up, pink eyes brimming with artificial tears, bottom
lip quivering like a nervous jelly. She sniffed, and wiped her eyes
with the back of her hand.
"It wasn't?"
"We all make mistakes sometimes. This is your first mission."
She nodded and smiled weakly. The other Beserkers, all motionless, opened, and the
others climbed out. Bjors flipped open the cargo hold of his and began
to pass out weapons. Pitrak and the other two robots went
Secure-Mode-Active, and Ship fluttered down from her Beserker and
brightened up.
"Someone gimme a gun. A really, really big gun!"
Bjors hefted out a Asteroid Wrecker and passed it to Ship. She
loaded, charged and primed the weapon, the fell over.
"Maybe something a little smaller?"
Deep in the undergrowth by the holographic sign, broken wires
trailed into a deep hole, still sparking, surrounded by a thick,
bubbling layer of oozing grey mucus...
