Many thousands of years ago, the Shee built a multitude of research worlds, to test the different environments on sphere worlds. But they were abandoned by the Shee after only a few decades, and much of these worlds decayed to a feral state, or simply died out. Only several of the Shee's worlds, both disc and sphere, survived the leaving of the Shee, these being Albia, Hades, Olympia, Avalon, Terra Nornia, Elyssia and Midgard.

The world of Avalon was lost to the malevolent race known only as the Borg, turning the once-prosperous garden world into the mechanoid Hive World of the Borg Norns. Olympia was lost in a cataclysm of fire when a Ljynii ship collided with the sun, making it go nova. The jungle world of Elyssia was invaded by the voracious alien Fiends, which left it a barren rock, devoid of life.

The four main worlds that survived became stronger, but Albia, Hades and Terra Nornia suffered natural disasters and fell dormant, only to be reawakened by the mysterious Hands centuries later. The only planet not to befall any disaster was Midgard, due to the unique nature of its creator.

Midgard was the creation of Jal'ak Kalis, the incredible Golden Shee. His strange genome was unlike any other, giving him a golden skin, and making him highly intelligent to the point of near psychic ability. He was fascinated with ancient Shee religion, and made his research world of Midgard steeped in ancient myth and legend. On this world he placed thirteen powerful Norns based on the gods of old. With them he trusted the planet, knowing it would thrive with their help. He populated the planet with breeds of Norn, Ettin and Grendel based on mythical creatures from his race's past.

When the Shee left their homeworld and all their experiments behind, Jal'ak was forced to leave Midgard behind. As a final blessing, he left powerful knowledge hidden on the planet where no-one could find it. When they were ready, the knowledge would reveal itself and the world would be ready to find the Shee again.
