Kapalua offers
peaceful seclusion and refined pleasures along the shoreline of the north-western tip of
the Hawaiian island of Maui. The resort is surrounded by natural boundaries of ocean and
mountains and set amid a 23,000-acre pineapple plantation. "Kapalua" is
interpreted in Hawaiian as "arms embracing the sea" and the resort, 10 miles
north of the historic Lahaina Town on the scenic north west coast of Maui, certainly
embraces its visitors.
Location
The resort is well served by the inter-island Kapalua West Maui Airport,
located 10 minutes south from Kapalua. The international airport is 50 minutes away in the
town of Kahului. The climate in the region is moderate with an annual average temperature
of 71-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Golf
Courses
Kapalua boasts three famed 18-hole courses - The Bay, The Village and The
Plantation and all are considered to be among the finest courses in the Pacific. Players
of all skill levels can enjoy a challenging and enjoyable round with breathtaking views.
The resort's most famous course, the 7,263-yard, par-73 Plantation Course, designed by Ben
Crenshaw and Bill Coore, takes in island canyons and oceanfront plateaus. The expansive
fairways and large putting surfaces present a tough challenge and embody traditional
aspects of a seaside links course. This course is the home of the PGA Tour's Mercedes
Championship, the title for which is currently held by the undisputed world No 1 Tiger
Woods. In the most recent Mercedes Championship held on the Plantation Course in January
2000, Woods won a thrilling contest with the great South African player and double US Open
champion Ernie Els. After the pair of them had conquered the 663-yard closing hole (the
longest currently in use on America's PGA Tour), Woods finally clinched victory by holing
a 40-foot putt across the green at the second extra hole. That victory was the first of
nine he had claimed by the end of September 2000 - the largest haul of tour titles since
Sam Snead won 11 times in 1950.
