Typing Accents and Other Characters


To type accents on a computer, hold down the Alt key while typing in one of these codes. Two important things to remember: 1) The Number Lock must be on. 2) These codes only work if you use the numbers on the number pad. Holding down Alt and typing the codes using the number keys above the letters will do nothing.

Notes:
1)Codes 0171 and 0187 are what are used in French instead of quotes. They are called guillemets.
2)French uses the a-e ligature, � and � (codes 0198 and 0230, respectively), for words borrowed from Latin such as et c�tera.
3)It is not considered necessary to used accents on capital letters, however it is often considered good style to do so.
4)The o-e ligature, � and � (codes 0140 and 0156, respectively), is sometimes substituted with "oe" when a person is typing on a computer/typewriter that cannot make this character (older systems), or when a person does not know how to create this character using their computer/typewriter. For French words that don't contain this character, but instead use separate letters o and e, such as coercitif and coexistence, it is not correct to use the character �.
