| JOE'S FAVORITE 50 RAP SONGS |
| Gangsta's Paradise Coolio "I'm the kinda G the little homies wanna be like on my knees in the night, saying prayers in the streetlight" That's right everyone, #3. Coolio. This is one of my favorite songs period. He hit us with the right song with the right sound and the right lyrics at the right time. Have you ever seen Dangerous Minds? This song plays for the intro. I don't think there's any way a song could match the tone of a movie more than this. But that's not why it's great. I don't know why it's great. Do you? The chorus was taken from a Stevie Wonder song. That's not why it's great either. Damn. As I was writing this, I remembered about "Too Hot", by Coolio. That woulda made this list. Since I'm gonna need to fill a whole page with 3 songs, I'll give you a few quotes from that one: "Let me explain now Aiesha slept wit' Mark Then Mark slept wit' Tina Then Tina slept wit' Javier An' the first time he seen her Javier slept wit' Loopy An' Loopy slept wit' Rob Cuz he was rollin' on beeds an' had a goodass job Rob slept wit' Lisa who slept wit' Steve, an' Steve was positive H.I.V." "A mind is a terrible thing to waste that was the slogan But now it's '95 an' it's don't forget the Trojan" "So put a condom in their hand and hope it don't bust Another victim of the lust In God we trust" "Another day in the city, an' Know what a pity Even though we did our duty things are still lookin' shitty Everybody in the packstack tryin' to make some scraps Walkin' in the rain but they ain't got no hat" A whole song about safe sex! "Walkin in the rain but they ain't got no hat?!?!?! Good gracious, what a good line! Sorry, Coolio. This is my biggest regret of the list. Changes 2-Pac "Cops give a damn about a negro pull the trigger kill a nigga he's a hero" "And as long as I stay black I gotta stay strapped & I never get to lay back 'Cause I always got to worry 'bout the pay backs some buck that I roughed up way back comin' back after all these years rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat that's the way it is" This song.....2-Pac was a smart guy. The only reason this song isn't #1 is that he took a song that was already out there for the chorus. Seriously. My top 3 was like a Heisman list. Everything is so good, I had to start looking for excuses to eliminate songs. This song has the rare combination of great lyrics and great sound. Add that to the eerie last lines, and you got a winner. The end of this song gets the "goosebumps" award from me. I still get a weird feeling when I listen to it. If 2-Pac's unhappy that he got shot, I'm sure he's looking down with pride, because he made the great Joe Sutton's rap list. Regulate Warren G. f. Nate Dogg "I gotta come up real quick before they start to clown i besta pull out my strap and lay them bustas down They got guns to my head I think I'm going down I can't believe this happened in my home town If I had wings I could fly let me contemplate I glanced in the cut and I see my homey Nate Sixteen in the clip and one in the hole Nate Dogg is about to make some bodies turn cold now they droppin and yellin it's a tad bit late Nate Dogg and Warren G. had to regulate" Now I'm not one to advocate violence, but sometimes......Sometimes you just gotta regulate. I understand, Warren. One time I had some suckas all in my mix too. I too was forced to lay them bustas down. If you have any evidence that this song is a remake, this song will be stripped of its glory. For now though, after a non-exhaustive Yahoo search, it is my #1 song. Great lyrics, great sound, combined talent, and a very, very unique song. I hope you enjoyed the list. If not, tell me, and I'll promptly move you to the top of my hit list. |
