Week 7 - English in the Korean Context

Guidelines for Presentations and Reports

In the seventh week of class students, working alone, will give presentations and write up reports documenting the presence of English in Korea as it is used as a communicative tool among Koreans. This should be a fun project in that it entails a little simple detective work. Students will have to actually go out and hunt down five or so pieces of evidence clearly showing English in Korean society, not as a communicative tool for non-Koreans but for Koreans. The evidence can take two basic forms. The first of these would be simple photographic evidence of signs, posters, advertisements, billboards, or things like this which show simple uses of English for a Korean audience. The second type of evidence would be documentary evidence or realia and this includes things like forms or paperwork containing English but used in Korea. The form should be procured and either photographed or scanned for the purposes of presenting. Student should be ready by Wednesday April 11 to do a five to ten minute presentation.

Presentations should simply include a presentation of the evidence collected by the student and shown on the computer as well as an explanation of (1) where the evidence was found, (2) what the student thinks the evidence is used for, (3) and what this tells us about English in/and Korean society.

Students will be picked at random Wednesday (April 11) or Friday (April 13) to do the presentations, but all the reports will be due from everybody on Friday, even from people who did not get a chance to present, as maybe not everyone will get the chance to do this . The report should contain printouts of the pictures as well as the explanation, mentioned above. The explanation should be kept simple and not too formal.

Good luck and I really hope you have a lot of fun with this.
