Approaches to English Grammar

Fall 2006

Summer Reading Project

For this summer reading project you are expected to read Celce-Murcia and Hilles (1988) in its entirety. This is a rather general book offering insights into how we might go about teaching grammar. It is useful in that it provides us with a variety of different techniques and resources for the teaching of grammar. These will be useful when students enter the class proper and need to discuss ways of doing things for grammar instruction.

After reading this small book I want students to make materials to explain and practice a particular grammar point. The materials should be based on the techniques and/or resources presented in Celce-Murcia and Hilles (1988). They should be quite inclusive for teaching the grammar point and original in their design. They can take the form of posters, handouts, videos, or all three. The more creative the materials developed the better. Try to have fun with this. Some students may be asked to present their materials in class (time permitting).

This is due the second week of class on September 19th.

Please feel free to bug me if you have any questions.....
