Ham radio is not just fun. Many ham operators are trained disaster volunteers too! They are among the first ones to reach out with help when a disaster strikes!

Communication is critical in Disaster relief. There are many public service organizations where Hams are actively involved in Disaster and Emergency communications. Groups such as ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) and RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services)are formed with this goal in mind. During a disater or during the recovery period, Hams will be deployed in key points to ensure safe and reliable communication to assist the needy. Disasters are not the  only occasion when Communication is critical. During big events that involves a very large public and spread over a wide geographical area, the need to coordinate arises. And as always Hams are in the forefront of these events too. Few examples are New York City Marathon, different charity walks, Governor's Island boat show and many emergency prepardness drills conducted by Public Agencies.
