And now on with Basic. The Training was vigorous, and hard at times, But like I tell everyone it's only what you make it and I made it fun, But still I always liked a good Challenge and Basic was Nine weeks of one.
The Picture above is me in a Field Training Exercise guarding the Area from a possible attack. My battle buddy is the guy just behind me, Diggs. A good man and a friend I hope the army brings him my way again.
From Basic I moved on to the Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Eustis. It is also the same place my brother is stationed right now. At AIT I was trained to be a Crew Cheif on the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior. The helicopter you saw on page one. Training took the better part of three months to complete, and was a fun time. I never had a problem with the training. I did have a fling in AIT but nothing more then a night or two. I only remember her first name Heather. I think her last name might have been Sootsman. Never mind that bit of trivial informtion. I had a few friends there, But I have never been any good with names so please don't ask me to remember. I got my Orders to Korea on about the 2nd of Nov. 2000. I was so excited! I could not wait to get there... And that Is by my definion of when I really became a soldier! Strong and True even to this day!
