Q and A with Bryan Powers

Bryan talks about the early days of Solid Jones & the new direction their music is taking

Karen: When did you start writing songs as a team?
Bryan: We started with Solid Jones back in about '93- Most of the music was funk based such as Success in which I would write the music and Jay would fit in the lyrics.  On other tunes like Under the Weather, Jay would come to me with a melody and I would fit in the guitar.  Jay and I wrote Pull the Covers from scratch one night and both collaborated on the music and lyrics.

Karen: What were the first songs you collaborated on?
Bryan: In order to the best of my recollection:  Success, Trained Specialist, Superbad, Microscopic Funk, King of the World, Deal With It, Simple Event, Pull the Covers, Under the Weather, Devil Hasn't Got Me.  Many others were written, but never recorded.  Some of those ideas will come out on our new stuff.

Karen: I understand the band broke up when Jay went to L.A. and Bryan played with
several other bands after the band broke up?  What bands?
Bryan: The band actually first split when Dirty Dave moved to Colorado, then Bryan moved to Memphis, Then Jay to LA. Bryan played in "Shady, Grady and Boy" in Springfield with frontman Jim Deer (www.jimmydeluxe.com) and drummer Dirty Dave.  Fausto was the first Memphis band that consisted of Hi-Tone business partner, Dave Green and frontman Terry McClain (www.therealside.com).  National Tuesday was the last official Memphis band, but continue to make guest appearances with Red Snapper, members of Speakeasy (www.speakeasy.com) and a number of other bands.

Karen: Bryan went to Memphis?  When, why?
Bryan: Jan. '98 to go to recording school at the University of Memphis (Graduated with a Music Business Degree.)

Karen: How/when did you develop an interest in electronica and what motivated you?
Bryan: Always had an interest in early Psychedelia.  Electronic music was just the new way to express it.  My electronic stuff is very pretentious in that is was written for me, although it seems some others can enjoy it almost as much as I do.

Karen: Is Kevin Cubbins still going to produce the record?
Bryan: We still haven't decided.  Some of the new stuff will be more suitable for Kevin and some of the others will be more suitable for Pete Matthews.   We are almost at the point where we have enough genre specific material to record two albums if we can ever connect.
