Back

While driving home from work one night, I was sitting at a stoplight when I was rear-ended by a full-size '92 Chevy van. The van driver said he was looking in his side mirror trying to change lanes and didn't realize traffic was stopped. There were about six feet of skid marks, so he did hit the brakes just before impact, but he was probably going 30 mph when he hit me.

The rear of the Prius crumpled thoroughly.

The rear quarter panels and some of the rear suspension
wrapped around the rear tires, so it was not driveable.

However, the doors (and therefore, the passenger compartment) did not deform.

I was pushed into the car in front of me, which was an '87 Buick.
The front impact was slow enough that it did not trigger my airbags,
but the front bumper and hood were dented.

The Buick's driver was taken away on a back-board and stretcher,
but I walked away with nothing more than a sore neck, which
disappeared in two days with a little ibuprofen and Icy Hot.

The Prius was only three months old, but my insurance company was very generous to reimburse me for list price minus a small mileage deduction, which was covered by the van driver's insurance company. Less than a month later, we were driving around in an identical Prius, which we found right on the dealer's lot!
