Monto was a large and well-known red light district on Dublin's north side (i.e.
north of the River Liffey), centered on what was then called Montgomery Street,
from which its name derived.
Monto's brothels lost a large portion of their clientele when the British troops
were withdrawn from the barracks of Dublin following Irish independence.
The brothels were forced to close in 1925 by a civic effort led by Frank Duff,
who had founded the Legion of Mary in 1921 to give the former prostitutes an
alternative way of life.
To help renovate the neighborhood, the street's name was then changed to Foley
Street.
