Unlike the prostitutes of Monto's brothels, who served a mostly working-class clientele, the southside attracted wealthier gentlemen. They would often finish an evening of food and drink by hiring a taxi and a girl, who would provide her services in the back of the taxi.

Honor Bright, whose real name was Lily O'Neill or Lizzie O'Neill, rented an apartment at No. 48 Newmarket in the Liberties, and her landlady had no doubts as to how all of her young tenants paid their rent. Honor was an attractive and fashionably-dressed escort girl, who was well-known and well-liked by both the regular clients of the St. Stephen's Green area as well as the taxi drivers and other prostitutes.

On the evening of the 8th of June, 1925, Honor was working the east corner of St. Stephen's Green, watching gentlemen leave the Shelbourne Hotel on the other side of Merrion Row.
