St. Stephen's Green is one of five public parks laid out in Dublin in the late
18th century: Mountjoy and Rutland (now called Parnell) Squares on the
northside, and St. Stephen's Green, Merrion Square, and Fitzwilliam Square on
the southside.
St. Stephen's Green is very close to Trinity and University Colleges and also to
the governmental centers of Dublin, making it a very popular place.
It was also very close to the Liberties, a slum that was so called because it
had originally been formed as one of several regions to which the king of
Britain granted greater self-governing power in the Middle Ages.
