| Born As: Toni Collette Born In: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Born On: November 1, 1972 Awards And Recognition: Collette has won the Australian equivalent of the Academy Award three times, for "Muriel's Wedding," "Lilian's Story" and "The Boys." She was nominated for the award for her performance in her very first film, "Spotswood." She also received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in "Muriel's Wedding." Most recently, she was nominated for an Academy Award of Best Supporting Actress for her role in "The Sixth Sense." Start In The Business: Collette left the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney at the age of 16 to study acting. By the age of 18 she had already starred opposite Anthony Hopkins in the Australian film "Spotswood." Breakout Roles: By starring in the 1994 sleeper hit "Muriel's Wedding," Collette broke through to a global acclaim rare for Australian film stars. Off The Set: To play the part of a zaftig wedding hopeful in "Muriel's Wedding," Collette gained more than 40 pounds in just seven weeks with the help of a dietician. She's the eldest of three children. In her free time she likes to go on mental and spiritual retreats in India. She also does yoga and has climbed the Tibetan Himalayas. She is also a vegetarian. |
