JOHN'S ROCKS

NOVA SCOTIA AGATE AND JASPER
Agate and Jasper rocks are collected from the beaches along the Bay of Fundy Shore of Nova Scotia. We collect rocks from Scots Bay to Westport. They come in all sizes and shapes and colours.
The larger rocks are cut in a slab saw into slices. Then the designs are cut from them, shaped and polished into cabachon stones. These become the stones used for jewellery such as pendants, rings, and earrings.

Stones which are not appropriate for cabachon are tumbled. These are put into a tumbler with grit and run for several weeks. The grits are replaced with gradually finer grit  until the stones are highly  polished. It takes about 3 weeks to finish a load of stones.

Some of the finished stones have small holes drilled in them using a diamond drill. Some are cut into circles with diamond cutters.
