JOHN'S ROCKS PAGE TWO
COLLECTING THE STONES
This is a picture of John collecting stones on a beach on the Bay of Fundy shore. He did find a few here. The waterfall is beautiful, even in the rain! This is typical of that shore.
ROUGH STONES ON WOODEN BLOCKS
The smaller stones are glued onto wooden blocks which fit into the large slab saw. Then slabs are taken from them. These are used to make the cabachon stones. Really small pieces, and bits of large ones are put into the tumbler to smooth and polish.
LARGE SAW TO MAKE SLABS
This is the large slab saw. We use Varsol to keep the saw blade cool. This saw originally belonged to Cliff Hood, John's father who operated Hood's Limited and Acadia Gems, and Markland Gems. He was the first President of the Nova Scotia Mineral and Gem Society..
This is a poor picture of an amythest geode. In real life ( as it were) it is brilliant purple crystals which shine in the sunlight. We have several small geodes which are very interesting.
Some cabachon stones in the final stages of production. They have been cut, ground to shape, sanded and polished. They will be used for pendants, earrings , and rings.
The final product of many hours of tumbling, with various grits and polish. We sell them in bags on cards as in the picture and also as loose stones. They are in a variety of sizes. When we find two similar ones we make earrings from them. Others have bails glued on them, or holes drilled with a ring in it, and then a pendant made from them.
