This is a picture taken shortly after we picked up Mika. She was born in the shelter as the result of an accident. The shelter temporarily had a Doberman staying with them, one night he got out and "met" a Beagle female who was not yet sterilized. I am thankful for it, I got a great dog as a result. When we picked her up, she was a little nervous about leaving the only home she had ever known. She was terrified of the car, and hid her head in the floorboard and shook uncontrollably during the ride. When we got her home, she at first did not know what to do with all the personal space she had (1000 sqare feet). She also immediately aquired an affinity for food of all kinds, and learned that Ayako is a good target to hit up for food because she is a softie, unable to resist the sad eyes of a dog. For the first week, she would spontaneously run wild around the apartment until she was totally out of energy. We found a good dog park in Costa Mesa where she was able to run free for miles at a time. Mika and D.J. would spend many hours and make many friends at that park.
