Reverb Plug-in verses Outboard processing
This test was inspired by a topic at Audioforums.com titled "reverb plug-ins s**k". After a lot of debating and sharing of techniques, I felt it appropriate to put up this page. Not to mention the fact that I was challenged by a gentlemen in the forum to do this. So that's the explanation of this page. In short, it's the result of grown men with varying opinions and too much time on their hands. Now...here's the skinny on the "test".

The original files are 16bit .wav files taken directly from Sonic Foundry's loop series drum tools. These are completely unprocessed loops. We chose a snare file for the test. John used an Alesis microverb with a mackie mixer to process both samples. Michael used Sonic Foundry's acoustic mirror with a hall preset sampled from A TC Electronic M2000. Both users submitted 100% wet files and a "mixed" file. The reason for this is to clearly hear the reverb, and to also hear it in a real life situation. I must admit, it is hard to tell which is better considering that it was difficult finding similar "rooms". So I'm really not sure if this solves anything at all! But, the files are below, you be the judge....then take the poll.

IE users: right click and choose "save target as"

Original file unprocessed:

snare.wav

John's files processed with outboard gear:

snare_allwet_alesis.wav

snare_mixed_alesis.wav

Michael's files processed with Acoustic Mirror:

snare_allwet_mirror.wav

snare_mixed_mirror.wav
