| American Prodigy Workbook (example) Cover List your name, heroes, mentors, and projects Name: John Owens Heroes: Joan of Arc and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mentor: Pastor James Kendell Project: group project leader Section 1 - Personalities Describe the personality of your parents, siblings and important family members: My mom has a wonderful, bubbly personality. She loves puns, corny jokes, and is a romantic. She is an idealist at times but is a very hard worker and does well if she can design a creative plan to get things done. My mom is compassionate, sometimes this gets her in trouble. I remember once telling her that she needed to care less about things, and she said, thats what everyone keeps on telling me. I love her! My dad is a natural introvert and is very funny. A hard worker and a dedicated pay the lowest price budgeter. He values security very high on his agenda. He is a cowboy and a secret agent all wrapped up into one. My half brother David is pretty much full blood. I love him to death and we are a lot alike. He is very studious and has high achievements academically. He can be really extroverted and out there, more than me. He is very active and is always doing something. In that way we are very different. He works really hard and will accomplish a great deal because of his high goals. Describe the personalities of the person you most admire and the person you most dislike I love my brother more than anyone else in the world. He makes me laugh and I can make him laugh. We grew up together and shared a lot of ups and downs together. He has great advice and probably knows me better than anyone in the world. He supports me and my dreams even though he isnt afraid to put me in check if I am getting out of hand. He keeps in contact through his busy schedule and I know he loves me very much. I had a cocky professor last spring who bothered me a lot. He was cocky, snooty, and boring. His class was a Sociological perspective of religion, yet for the most part he just gave his opinion and what the religions believed in. I confronted him the first day after class when he bashed Christian Fundamentalism. He did the same thing on the last day of class and when I approached him about it, he was pissy and unapologetic. Describe your own personality I am a friendly, outgoing, and an eccentic guy. I am pretty upbeat but I also really enjoy taking it easy. I can sometimes be lazy, but I have a tremendous appetite for planning and so I get a lot done with little effort. I am thrifty but splurge every once and awhile. I choose the path less traveled by and that has made all the difference. Section 2 - Business Basics Personal finance A key component of personal finance is financial planning, a dynamic process that requires regular monitoring and reevaluation. In general, it has five steps: Assessment: One's personal financial situation can be assessed by compiling simplified versions of financial balance sheets and income statements. A personal balance sheet lists the values of personal assets (e.g., car, house, clothes, stocks, bank account), along with personal liabilities (e.g., credit card debt, bank loan, mortgage). A personal cash flow statement lists personal income and expenses. List your personal assests and liabilities. Assets: Scooter = $200 Books = $300 Technology = $200 Clothes = $100 House = $10,000 Bank Account = $3,000 Liabilities: None List your personal income and expenses to make a personal cash flow statement: Income: House = $400 Job = $600 Scholarship = as needed Expenses: Food = $200 Transportation = $150 Utilities = $100 Phone = $50 Fun = $50 Setting goals: Setting financial goals helps direct financial planning. Examples of financial goals are: "To retire at age 50 with a personal net worth of $800,000," or "To buy a house in 3 years paying a monthly mortgage servicing cost that is no more than 25% of my gross income". It is not uncommon to have several goals, some short term, and some long term. List 2 short term and 2 long term financial goals: Short Term: Buy a house and pay it off within 5 years Get a job as a server making at least $15 an hour Long Term: Retire at age 50 with a personal net worth of $1.5 million Start a for profit business that will create $15,000 yearly profits with me being retired Creating a plan: The financial plan details how to accomplish your goals. It could include for example, reducing unnecessary expenses, increasing your employment income, or investing in the stock market. Execution: Execution of one's personal financial plan often requires discipline and perseverance, and many people obtain assistance from professionals such as accountants, financial planners, investment advisors, and lawyers. Monitoring and reassessment: As time passes, one's personal financial plan must be monitored for possible adjustments or reassessments. Write a plan for each financial goal you wrote above: House: have friends stay with me and pay rent Job: put in applications and talk with friends to see if there are any openenings Retire: save money by being thrifty and budgeting down normally expensive things Business: find the best idea and then pursue it while still young, if I fail then try again Entrepreneurship Definition: Entrepreneurship is the practice of starting new organizations, particularly new businesses generally in response to identified opportunities. Entrepreneurship is often a difficult undertaking, as a majority of new businesses fail. Entrepreneurial activities are substantially different depending on the type of organization that is being started. Entrepreneurship ranges in scale from solo projects (even involving the entrepreneur only part-time) to major undertakings creating many job opportunities. List two business opportunities that you might pursue as a solo project: Starting a clean-up group that helps keep my church clean Create a clothing company that sells "I (heart) Tulsa" T-shirts at tulsa events Charateristics of an Entrepreneur: -The entrepreneur has an enthusiastic vision, the driving force of an enterprise. -The entrepreneur's vision is usually supported by an interlocked collection of specific ideas not available to the marketplace. -The overall blueprint to realize the vision is clear, however details may be incomplete, flexible, and evolving. -The entrepreneur promotes the vision with enthusiastic passion. -With persistence and determination, the entrepreneur develops strategies to change the vision into reality. -The entrepreneur takes the initial responsibility to cause a vision to become a success. -Entrepreneurs take prudent risks. They assess costs, market/customer needs and persuade others to join and help. -An entrepreneur is usually a positive thinker and a decision maker. Career "The key to a happy and fulfilling future is knowing yourself. This self-knowledge is the most important component of finding the right career" Richard Nelson Bolles, author of What Color Is Your Parachute The above is very true, but this section is going to be dedicated to figuring out what a career IS and not with what career is best for you. Defintion: 1) One's calling in life; a person's occupation. 2) An individuals work and life roles over their lifespan The first definition refers to a meaningful pursuit of one's destiny. The second says a career is mearly your work history and general identity. Both are true. Meaningful Pursuit of Destiny: This is an inward perspective of what your life is working towards. To believe that you were destined to do what it is that you are doing will bring happiness and success to your life. A street sweeper who believes that he/she is meant to sweep streets will gladly get up to go to work and whistle while he/she sweeps. List three jobs that you would normally think of as not being fun and then describe what would make you happy while doing them: House painter: I would pretend that the house was my canvass and I was painting a giant portrait for the family who lived there. Assembly Line Worker: I would pretend that what I was making was for a secret government agency. Dentist: I would put lipstick on guys when they are under anesthesia. Work History and General Identity Most people at some point will be a career care taker. This means that they will be the only one taking care of a child, a parent, or even their own spouse. Single moms and dads have 2 careers, taking care of the kids and then working full time. Sometimes a person will be taking care of their parent, their kids, and their spouse all while working a fulltime job. It might happen to you one day. Your parents take care of you now, one day your spouse might have to take care of you or eventually your kids. Career and family go together like peas and carrots. Some careers make it difficult to take care of your families emotional needs. Traveling or working overtime will put a strain on your relationship with your spouse and children. Consider how your work will jive with your personal identity. List 2 jobs that you would make it easy to also be a career care taker. List 2 jobs that would make it hard: Easy: Desk job like accounting that doesn't require overtime. Make your home a day care so you can always be there. Hard: Pilot because you are always out of town Night Shift worker because your hours would be off Section 3 - Define Youth Culture Politics Politics is the process by which groups make decisions. Although the term is generally applied to behavior within governments, politics is observed in all human (and many non-human) group interactions, including corporate, academic, and religious institutions. In general, politics can be considered the art of navigating through tensions among multiple "I"s and the "we" to achieve collectively desired ends. Power Max Weber defined power as the ability to impose one's will upon another, while Hannah Arendt states that "political power corresponds to the human ability not just to act but to act in concert." Authority is the ability to enforce laws, to exact obedience, to command, to determine, or to judge. A government is the body that has the authority to make and enforce rules or laws. Sovereignty is the ability of a government to exert control over its territory free from outside influence. Describe how you feel about American Politics I think that we need more than just a 2 party system. I believe politicians should run as independent more often. I don't like how it seems that Iraq was based on a lie. I don't like war and wish we would stop causing them. The world seems to not respect the way our politicians are acting even though they respect democracy and freedom. Describe what postive changes would occur if the government listened to students ages 13-30 Schools would improve because students are the ones learning. There would be a lot more community and activity based programs. Public education would be free all through college. History Here is a list of the different types of history: Archaeology - study of prehistoric and historic human cultures through the recovery, documentation and analysis of material remains and environmental data. Archontology - study of historical offices and important positions in state, international, political, religious and other organizations and societies. Art History - the study of changes in and social context of art. Chronology - locating events in time. Cultural history - the study of culture in the past. Economic History - the study of economies in the past. Futurology - study of the future: researches the medium to long-term future of societies and of the physical world. History painter - painters of historical motifs and particularly the great events. Natural history - history of the natural world, now usually referred to as science Paleography - study of ancient texts. Psychohistory - study of the psychological motivations of historical events. Social History - the study of societies and social trends in the past. Military History - The study of warfare and wars in history and what is sometimes considered to be a sub-branch of military history, Naval History. Youth Culture History Lesson Prior to World War II, young people in Western culture had little freedom or influence. With the development of post-war affluence and the subsequent baby boom in the United States and Europe, young people began to gain considerable societal influence and buying power. Throughout the 1950s, the growing numbers of young people in the USA and Europe began to greatly influence music, television, and cinema, spurring the explosion of rock & roll in the late-1950s and a full-blown youth culture in the mid-1960s, partly in the form of subcultures such as mods, rockers, and hippies. The creation of youth specific culture was accelerated by the introduction of public money for schools. In 1875, the Supreme Court made a decision that public money could be used to fund school education. This meant that adolescents and children were gathering together daily, creating their own culture and identities. As teenagers created their own identity and their expendable income increased marketing companies focused their efforts to this emerging subset of society. The tastes of young people began to drive fashion, music, films and literature. Corporations quickly took note and adapted to the shift by devising marketing strategies for the new demographic, creating magazines and eventually their own TV channel, MTV. For young people, being more open to change and challenge, technology came easier and fashions changed quicker than their adult counterparts. Baby boomers began to enter the workforce in the 1970s, and thereby wielded even greater influence, helping to innovate the computer revolution, which would be exploited fully by the next generations of young people. Describe the kind of student who usually creates the next youth style of fashion, music, etc: They are usually confident and seek out a diversity of people, cultures, and experiences. They aren't necessarily book smart, athletic, or handsome but they are very clever. Some say history repeats itself; describe what youth culture history you want to repeat: The hippie movement of the 1960's and 70's. Religion The following statistics are taken from wikipedia.org and are meant to be a general estimate of the amount of practicing adherents to world religions and those who are not a part of any religion. There was no definition of a practicing christian, muslim, hindu, or any of the other religions given with these statistics. Christianity 2.1 billion Islam 1.3 billion Non-Adherent (Secular/Atheist/Irreligious/Agnostic/Nontheist) 1.1 billion Hinduism 900 million Chinese folk religion 394 million Buddhism 376 million Primal indigenous ("Pagan") 300 million African traditional and diasporic 100 million Sikhism 23 million Juche 19 million Spiritism 15 million Judaism 14 million Bah' Faith 7 million Jehovah's Witnesses 6.5 million Jainism 4.2 million Shinto 4 million Cao Dai 4 million Zoroastrianism 2.6 million Tenrikyo 2 million Neo-Paganism 1 million Unitarian Universalism 800,000 Rastafari movement 600,000 Members of an organized religion may not see any significant difference between religion and spirituality. Or they may see a distinction between the mundane, earthly aspects of their religion and its spiritual dimension. Some individuals draw a strong distinction between religion and spirituality. They may see spirituality as a belief in ideas of religious significance (such as God, the Soul, or Heaven), but not feel bound to the bureaucratic structure and creeds of a particular organized religion. They choose the term spirituality rather than religion to describe their form of belief, perhaps reflecting a disillusionment with organized religion, and a movement towards a more "modern" more tolerant, and more intuitive form of religion. These individuals may reject organized religion because of historical acts by religious organizations, such as Islamic terrorism, the marginalisation and persecution of various minorities or the Spanish Inquisition. Describe how religion shows itself in youth culture. South park had an episode on showing Muhammed and there are a lot of religious students in Tulsa. There is christian youth music, clothing, and even conventions. Describe how students express their belief either for or against religion: Some will wear religious clothing or listen to religious music. Most just go to church on the weekend and sometimes durring the week. Almost nobody is preaching or yelling at people to convert, but it does happen. I once saw a guy who had a shirt that said, "When Jesus comes back, we'll nail him to the cross again." Current events The News covers current events. Examples are:: -Natural Disasters -War -Politics -Religion -Arts and Entertainment -Celebrities -Deaths -Business -Sports -The Eviroment -Science and Technology Knowing whats happening in the news is knowing what is happening in current events. The term is used more to describe major world events than local news topics like a cat getting stuck inside a car engine. Choose from the above list 3 current event topics that interest you. Describe how they effect you: Wars: I like to know whether the US is winning or losing in Iraq because I might one day join the military Religion: I am a very religious person and there have been a lot of christian scandals lately. The Environment: I hope the world will still be here by the time I get old Media and Technology Here is a short history of media communications: 1912: Air mail begins. 1919: Short-wave radio is invented. 1927: Philo Taylor Farnsworth debuts the first electronic television system. 1933: Edwin Armstrong invents FM Radio. 1935: First telephone call made around the world. 1938: The War of the Worlds is broadcast on October 30, causing mass hysteria. 1957: Sputnik is launched and sends back signals from near earth orbit. 1959: Xerox makes the first copier. 1963: Audio cassette is invented in the Netherlands. 1965: Vietnam War becomes first war to be televised. 1969: Man's first landing on the moon is broadcast to 600 million people around the globe. 1976: JVC introduces VHS videotape - becomes the standard consumer format in the 1980s & 1990s. 1981: The laptop computer is introduced by Tandy. 1983: Cellular phones begin to appear. 1991: World-Wide Web (WWW) publicly released by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN. Media Arts refers to painting, drawing, scultping and printmaking Becoming media and technology savy is very important in this day and age. The technological boom of the past century went hand and hand with the media communications boom. Knowing how use the tools of technolology will help you better understand and use media communications of today. You should be able to produce a website, a movie, or music just as much as you should be able to do geometry. You can practice creating media for free at: www.geocities.com - website design www.jumpcut.com - movies and music Create your own website and put your own video on it. Etiquette Modern Western etiquette instructs people to: -Greet friends and acquaintances with warmth and respect -Refrain from insults and prying curiosity -Offer hospitality equally and generously to guests -Wear clothing suited to the occasion -Contribute to conversations without dominating them -Offer assistance to those in need -Eat neatly and quietly -Avoid disturbing others with unnecessary noise -Follow the established rules of an organization upon becoming a member -Arrive promptly when expected -Comfort the bereaved -Respond to invitations promptly Etiquette changes from culture to culture. Youth culture has a distinct etiquette of dress, conversation, and social habits both to be respectful and establish appropriate behavior. List 3 etiquettes or manners that students should particularly work on. Text messaging or talking on a cell phone at appropriate times Using terms of respect like sir and miss Saying please and thank you Section 4 - Finding the Fine Arts The focus of this section is to explore and excercise the artistic styles of communitication. When expressing or experiencing art it is important to consider audience, meaning, structure, and intent. Writing News papers, text books, poetry, emails, notes, street signs, song lyrics, et cetera. They are forms of writing. They are all telling the reader something. Sometimes though, they are just ideas that the writer wanted to write. Writing can be extremely powerful and also extremely boring. Describe what you look like right now. Don't look at your reflection; use your memory and imagination. My face has a shade of stubble on it with the mustache area being especially thick. There is a hint of reds and yellows in my beard. My bangs are hanging over my eyebrows. They are tangled and a light brown with sun kissed streaks. My ears are turned out within a forest of hangin hair. My face is full and masculine. Dull blue eyes and a strong nose. There is a dimple in my chin and an ever so slight pucker to my lips. My eye lids overshadow my eyes as if I were drowsy. There is a darkness under my eyes dicoloring my skin. My cheeks are round and my skin peachy with a dash of melon. My neck is long and my body is laid out on my bed like a doll. Describe youth culture and what students are doing as a culture. Everything is so techy these days. You have to have the newest techniology to be cool. They are using styles of different cultures like ghetto rap and regae to express who they are. They look to celebs to figure out what they will look like and act like. We are just trying to have fun and figure out what we will do with the rest of our life. Music Awareness is probably the key when it comes to music. There is a strong historical influence from one genre to another. Saying you hate country and love rap is strange because rap came from country. But you are aware that country and rap are very different. Some would say, "It is just music to me, it's all the same." What they are pointing out is that music as we know it is not that innovative. Indie bands are what they would call rock bands 50 years ago. The songs are the same even though it is called a new genre. Being aware of the similarities and differences all at the same time is a good thing. You can jam out to Johnny Cash and then chill out with some Miles Davis Jazz. Music does stuff to people. It helps us think, or be happy, or get through hard times by letting us cry. Music changes lives. List 2 genres of music that you can relate to. Bluegrass Space age bachelor pad Jazz orchestra Describe how our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, makes you feel. Sometimes it is a little silly, like having to listen to it at some random event, but other times I get really emotional and respect everything that flag stands for. Film One of the things that American Prodigy is going to do a lot of is making videos. Why? Because they are the most real way of recording reality. Film is a very powerful art. List 3 video ideas that you would like to use in making a video Country Western Comedy where a guy keeps on dieing for different reasons and comes back as another character. Filming old people dancing with toddlers Noah's Arc in 2007: Global Warming List 3 of your favorite movies of all time. What Dreams May Come Jesus Christ Superstar Matrix Describe your experiences making home videos.. We didn't make really that many growing up, It was a lot of fun though when we did. One time my dad filmed a western with me and a spy flick. Lots of fun. Theatre Film has pretty much replaced what theatre did a hundred years ago. Theatre is any combination of live speech, gesture, mime, puppets, music, dance, sound and spectacle basically any one or more elements of the other performing arts. Theatre is evocative in a way that film is not. The stage is often seen as a dated relic of our history. Though Shakespear might not be as cool as he was years ago, stage performances can be an entertaining venue to see and particpate in. . Fashion The terms "fashionable" and "unfashionable" are used to describe whether someone or something fits in with the current popular type of expression. To be able to make things fashionable is a powerful gift. It is the golden touch. If Paris Hilton starts wearing cowboy boots, then others will too. It doesn't mean that cowboy boots are good or bad, just that she has influence. This applies to technology, hang out spots, and even to who you date. Some people are fashionable to date, like a trophy boyfriend or girlfriend. Being aware of this power in culture is important. You may love the color blue, but it might become unfashionable. What to do? Keeping wearing blue, because its your style. Style and fashion may sometimes clash, but don't sweat it, style is more important than fashion. Describe what things in society you would change if you could make anything fashionable. I would make non profit organizations fashionable. Then for profit orgs would die out and the evils of capitalism would go away.. Artwork Beautiful things around us make us feel better. It's true! Creating beautiful things make us feel better too. So art is an awesome way to feel good and help others feel good too. Did you know that there is a psychiatric therapy that uses art to help patients recover from there illness? Besides being a rich part of our history, art is simply nice to look at. Seriously, we loved making art, coloring, and drawing as kids; what happened? Draw a sketch of children plaing outside somewhere. Sketch a unique logo for American Prodigy. Section 5 - Reality of Relationships Leadership Analyzing the inspirational leader (one who can instill passion and direction into a group of individuals) requires an understanding of how the psychology of a group can affect the members of the grooup. People are always responding to what everyone else is doing, or at least, what they think everyone is going to do. Let's suppose we are a school dance and everyone just got in and the principal grabs the microphone and says, "Let's Dance!" Well, what will probably happen is that everyone standing there will not dance. In fact, everyone will start to walk off the dance floor. Why? No one sees anybody else dancing when the command is made. People that no one is dancing cause there are too many people just standing around out on the dance floor. Once students start moving off the floor it is like a chain reaction and everyone heads off. Groups work in strange ways. That is why leadership is so difficult. Groups have certain steps that they go through before they do what a leader says. 1) They look to see if what the leader wants is happening already 2) They move out of the way for others to do what the leader wants 3) They decide who they will mimick and then watch them In the case of the dance, the head cheerleader grabbed her date and headed out to the middle. Her cheerleader freiends quickly grabbed their dates and followed her out there. All the kids who wanted to be cool like the cheerleaders started to head out there too. But the cheereleaders started to do a choreographed dance and so people just watched them instead of dancing. Once their little cheer dance was done they started dancing with their dates. And so did the other people who wanted to be as cool as them. Now you probably already realized that these kind of things happen all the time. Do you know what the Principal should have done to avoid the whole cheerleader mess? Perhaps he shouldn't have said anything. Putting on the right song might have done the trick. Who knows? The important lesson learned here is that everyone is watching whats going down.. List and describe the top three student leaders at your school. Jaimie Pardo: Cheerleader and Student class vice president Stacy Nix: Cheerleader and student class president Me: Cool guy Network names, birthdays, phone numbers, trust factor Trust Factor Scale 1 This person is doing everything to hurt me 2 3 4 5 This person isn't hurting or helping me 6 7 8 9 10 This person is doing everything to help me List the top 20 people in your life. Name, Bday, Phone #, and on a scale of 1-10 rate how much you would trust them. David Owens Sept 23 #206 555-5555 TF 9 Bess Owens May 14 #253 555-5555 TF 9 Charles Owens Sept 23 # 918 555-5555 TF 9 Kevin Sabourin Anne Jeremey Donovan Joy Et cetera ... Benevolence Benevolence characterizes the true goodness of the mind and spirit, the unbiased kindness to do good. It confers thought and regard for the welfare of other people, and finds expression in sympathy and kindly gentleness and compassion, with charitableness and kindness. Those who lack benevolence have little, if any, thought or regard for others, and a tendency to help oneself, in neglect of others. It also means mean spirited, and a grouch. But the most popular definition is that of kindness, and pure of heart. I just thought it was important for everyone involved in American Prodigy to reflect on the concept of Benevolence, which is the cornerstone of how this project works. Family I won't write much about family because it is such a personal thing. There are plenty of statistics that suggest a lot of families are disfunctional. Here are some words of wisdom when it comes ot family: - The people in your family will and must change. Expect Change. - Never lose etiquette or love for your family even if you lose respect for it. - Every family has secrets, shame, and regrets. Forgive and forget. - Time is fleeting, death is inevitable, but don't bury the living. Embrace and honor your family while they can still feel your touch. - Pray together, play together, stay together. Descrbe a pretend momennt where you could do whatever you wanted with just you and your family . We would be sitting under a shady tree on a warm day at a picnic table. The food would be delicious and we would start laughing and hugging each other. My brother would start humming and playing the guitar and I would start making up a silly song and mom would be laughing and dancing around us.
