Plan for Materials Set

Audience |
low intermediate to high intermediate vocational ESL students studying at Atlanta Technical College |
| Purposes | I plan to help my students in the job acquisition process. In order to get certain jobs you have to have a knowledge of the jobs you are applying for, be prepared for the interview process, know when and how to follow-up an interview, and after getting a job, one must know how to maintain that job and when to move on to another job. |
| Methods |
I want the activities to be enjoyable
and something that they may not already know. I don't want to take for
granted my knowledge of the job acquisition process because there may
be different processes for other cultures. |
| Hot Potatoes Issues | I have to first acclimate myself to the software because I have never used it before. I plan on using a variety of activity types so that hopefully I won't have problems with any of them in particular. I hope to make the language simple enough for my students to do the activities, even when I am not present |
| Activities #1-2 | These first 2 activities will be designed in order to show the students the wide array of jobs that may be available to them. They must first know what the jobs are before they attempt to get them. I am thinking about having a reading passage for activity one and using a cloze gap activity as a fill-in-the blank activity. The second activity will either be T/F or a crossword puzzle. |
| Activities #3-5 | These three activities will be designed to show students the different places they can search to find a job. There are different ways to find a job. One way is to look in the newspaper; another way is by searching on the internet. Lastly, just walking in to certain establishments is acceptable. The activities will be designed with the three aforementioned ways of getting a job in mind. |

| Activities #6-7 | These two activities will be about the resume building process. Different jobs require different sorts of resumes. Also certain establishments are looking for certain credentials over others. I will use multiple choice and matching exercises for these activities. |
| Activities #8-11 | These activites will be devoted to the interview process. Certain things must be done in preparation, during, and after the interview. The first activity will discuss how to prepare for the interview. The second will be about the proper procedures for having the interview. The third activity will be about how to negotiate during an interview. Lastly, students need to know how to follow-up an interview. I will try to use at least 3-4 different activity types for these activities. |
| Activities # 12-13 | Maintaining your job is just as important as getting a job. If one can't keep a job, then s/he will have to keep repeating the job acquisition process from the very beginning over and over again. With that said, these two activities will be designed to help students know how to maintain a job in the U.S.A. There are certain cultural norms about the American work environment that need to be considered. |
| Activities #14-15 | When is it time to be content, time to negotiate, and time to move on? Students need to know when they should remain at their job, ask for more benefits, and/or when they should try finding another job. Also, they need to know that they must maintain their current job if they are going to look for a different job. I will provide a reading text for the students and they will have either multiple choice, T/F, fill-in-the blank, or matching exercises. I will use 2 of the 4 aforementioned activity types. |
