| Negotiating during an Interview |
| Never attempt to negotiate salary until you have a firm job offer! Know in advance the minimum salary you will accept. If you feel the salary offered to you is too low, you should express your concerns but also be aware that asking for a excessively high salary can put an offer at risk as you may appear unreasonable. Approach the discussion with a willingness to compromise. When discussing concerns about salary, rehearse your concerns with someone and try to anticipate a range of responses. Provide reasons for why you feel the salary should be higher and the salary range that you find acceptable. If possible, cite data and resources to support your position. You want to sound confident and pleasant and not appear whining or rude. Know when to stop - don\'t push your luck. During the conversation about the salary, be comfortable with the silence that may be the immediate response - do not rush in with additional information which may reveal your discomfort in discussing money. Contact the appropriate individual by telephone with your concern. Do not use email to express salary or other concerns that warrant a discussion. |
