NOTE: AS OF 6/1/07, I AM REGRETTABLY  UNABLE TO TRAVEL TO SPEAK UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Throughout the years Hollywood has provided some interesting "mathematics education moments" on both the large and small screens.  Remember the Scarecrow getting his brain in The Wizard of Oz?  How can you learn mathematics from Homer Simpson?  Or Jeff Foxworthy and his redneck friends?  The answers are easy: just come to this presentation of Math Class Goes to Hollywood.. You'll see some mathematics that is GOOD, some that is BAD, and some that is downright UGLY.  But in any case, you can learn some mathematics while watching these entertaining scenes.

I love to give this talk to any audience: teachers, students, the general public, and any combination of these.  It's my way of staying in touch: when I speak to students, I'm back in the classroom.  When I speak to teachers, I try to give them ideas of how to liven up their classes.
Feel free to contact me if you would like arrange for me to visit your institution.

John Hornsby is a native of New Roads, Louisiana and a lifelong resident of the Pelican State.  He received his B.S. in Mathematics Education from LSU and his M.S. in Mathematics from Southeastern Louisiana University.  After teaching at the high school level for seven years, he became an Instructor in Mathematics at the University of New Orleans in 1979.  He retired from UNO in 1996.  His professional  interests include mathematics for the liberal arts, incorporating graphing calculators in precalculus mathematics, and the history of mathematics. He is an author for Addison Wesley College Publishers,, a rabid fan of the Cleveland Indians, collects coins, and loves the music of the 1960s.

John is also available to speak on the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Ratio, topics which should be of renewed interest due to the recent movie release of The Da Vinci Code.
