Reviewer: Hannah B Cast: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and Geoffrey Rush Director: Gore Verbinski Producer: Jerry Bruckheimer Distributor: Walt Disney Certified: 12A Rating: ***** 'You forgot one very important thing mateI'm Cap'n Jack Sparrow' In the summer of 2003, there was one movie children, teens and adults couldn't stop talking aboutwith its high sea adventures and its scurvy dogs, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, is one movie you'll definitely want to see! Taken from Disney World Florida's most popular theme park attraction, Pirates of the Caribbean has taken the hearts and the laughs out of every person who have been to see the movie. Making it another slice of success for producer Jerry Bruckheimer (also the producer for the action filled movie Bad Boys II) and director Gore Verbinski, also directed 2002 bone chilling, success, The Ring!
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a boat load of fun for all. With its mixture of Horror, Romance, Comedy and most importantly Adventure, it will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more. Although the title may put a few people off, due to the fact most people associate Pirates with young children or young boy's fantasies, do not despair girls there is a treat for you too. The film not only has its share of mean, brutish looking pirates, but also has a few heart-throbs to boot. Such as Cap'n Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp (despite his mattered hair and gold teeth) and Will Turner played by Orlando Bloom (the young sexy blacksmith). These two characters have taken hold of the camera and many young girls hearts. Right from the start of the movie you are left wondering what will happen next. Although the movie is packed full of adventure, it still finishes leaving you wanting more action, more comedy and more Jack and Will. Pirates of the Caribbean follows the story of the infamous Cap'n Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), a pirate that sets sail for adventure on the quest
to recover his ship from cursed pirates. Who one day sails ashore to the dock of Port Royal, an English island run by Governor Swan (Jonathon Pryce) and his daughter Elizabeth's (Keira Knightly) admirer and troop captain, commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport). On Jacks prowl around Port Royal he meets Will Turner, a blacksmith found out at sea on the crossing from England. Who challenges Jack to a duelling match. All seemed to be going well, until the legendary ship The Black Pearl, lead by the evil, black hearted captain, Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wade anchor., and kidnap Elizabeth. Will, realising he would need Jacks help to rescue her, persuades Jack to take him to the Black Pearl. Barbossa is travelling to the dreaded Ella de Mwerta to undo the curse upon him and his crew, and Jack plans to beat them their. Using his whit, charm and cunning, Jack will try to outsmart his rival, Barbossa, and sail away on his ship of 'freedom' The Black Pearl. To some people, this storyline might not appeal them, but Depp and Bloom take away the serious stereotype of the script and replaced it with top class, hilarious comedy. With its series of slaps, hilarious phrases and amazing stunts you'll be left breathless and splitting your sides. The humour created by Johnny keeps the film from being thought of as a horror, but the movie still sends a few chills up your spine. Along side Verbinski and Bruckheimer is composer Klaus Badelt, who also made the music to such films as, Steven Spielberg's 2003 hit film, Gladiator. Also cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, who has worked with Bruckheimer before, making the movie Bad Company. With their work we get to hear a few refrains of the memorable Pirates of the Caribbean anthem: "Yo Ho! Yo Ho! A pirate's life for me!"

There is no question about it 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' belongs to none other than Johnny Depp (Edward Edward Scissorhand, Icabod Crane Sleep hollow), Orlando Bloom (Legolas Lord Of The Rings), Keira Knightley (Julia Bend it Like Beckham) and Geoffrey Rush (Shakespeare in Love, the banger sisters). Bloom and Knightly play the stereotypical role of Hollywood's romantic couple, Geoffrey Rush as your fearsome villain, and of course Johnny Depp being the star, contained in the majority of the scenes. With a head full of beads and a mouth full of Gold, Depp masters that tone which sets a smile on everyone's face. Using his facial expressions and idiosyncratic walk he can't help but make his audience laugh. Depp
quoted to E! channels reporter "I act on my own instinct, and wait to see what the audience think. I look forward to the criticism and take it in with good response" In one scene Jack is stranded with Elizabeth on an Island, which used to be used as a cash island for a rum runner business. Knowing this, Jack helps himself to the selection available and drinks as much as he can, then spends the night singing away with Elizabeth round a fire, drunk. This was a clear indicator of were Depp had got his inspiration from (other than pepi la pue) for this character. None other than the rolling stones guitarist, Keith Richards. He told E! channel, "Initially, when I was doing the research, I started thinking of pirates in the 18th century and I thought well what were they, you know. It's easy just to say that they were these sort of scoundrels and scalawags and going around, you know, ripping people off, but I actually thought that these guys were basically the rock and roll stars of that era. So, to me, I mean the coolest rock and roll star, the greatest rock and roll star is Keith Richards - the quintessential rock and roll star. So Keith became a great inspiration for the character and a main ingredient.."
Johnny Depp as Cap'n Jack Sparrow!
There's no doubt about it, Depp once again masters another staring role with perfection. Once again proving he can handle any character given to him. Although Depp was born in Kentucky, he skilfully nails the 18th Century Old English accent with flying colours. Combining his inspiration, accent, good looks and talent, Depp succeeds in giving Jack that rough-through and through look, whilst still showing he has a heart of gold inside. Replace Depp and your left with a tarnished, dull, motionless picture. He is like the essential piece of Aztec gold in the Movies chest, take it away and you're cursed with a lifeless film. The first rule to a great movie is to maintain the action. And never the less Pirates of the Caribbean fulfilled that rule with its constant sword fights, which were performed by the actors themselves, chases and
battles. After three months of intense training the actors managed to gain the skills of producing their lines correctly, staying in character and fighting, all at once. Some stunt men where used in a few shots, but the majority of the sword fights were done by the actors themselves! Pirates of the Caribbean rated 5/5 on my movie radar, it's the blockbuster we've all waited for even before it was made. Action! Romance! Comedy! Horror! Adventure! All packed into one cinematic film filled with some of the greatest actors this century, who can complain? 'Savvy?' Like most films we hope for a Pirates of the Caribbean 2, filled with more action, adventure and comedy. Well hope no more because Gore has already started the planning for the sequel and has signed up Depp, Bloom, Knightley, Davenport and Pryce for there characters appearance! I know what I'm looking forward too, Depp and Bloom, together, on one screen, working as a great team once again. Depp and Bloom are both looking forward to reuniting together on set and hope to work on more projects in the future
"Drink up me harties yo ho!"
Bloom (E! Channel - thoughts of Depp): "He's the dude man, he's kicking it and I'm just the straight guy, but, it was just, I'd be like "Forget the close-up, I'll have a two shot," do you know what I mean? I just loved being on camera with him. It kind of was like the odd couple. Depp (E! Channel - thoughts of Bloom): "It was like the comedy stylings of, you know, Captain Jack and Will Turner. I had a ball with Orlando, I really enjoyed working with him. He's just such a good guy and, you know, I'd love to do it again. I'd love to do many more films with him.
