| DNA My Genetic Test Where are we (Abel Edwards and Polly Potts Descendants) from? |
| June 2006 In June 2006 I was contacted by a distant cousin named Ted Edwards and he asked me if I would be willing to participate in a genetic study of our Edwards Ancestors. Specifically Ted's wife is my distant cousin. She is descended from Arthur Edwards b.1786, son to Abel and Polly. I recieved my test kit from www.familytreedna.com and completed the test and sent in the samples. In July 2006 around the 21st I should have the results. The study will compare our DNA samples and hopefully give us a gold mine of information. Anyone who has followed the Descendants of Abel and Polly will know and understand that Abel Edwards and Polly Potts of Henry Co. Virginia / Sullivan Co. Tennessee have not been placed outside of the colonies of Pre-Revolutionary War America. This has bothered me for years, I want to know where we come from. Are we Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish ???? This test will hopefully shed some light on this for me and all descendants of Abel Edwards and Polly Potts. Stay Tuned. I will post the results here. Johnny J. Enteresting details are to follow to this webiste concerning what was specifically found. Basically I am descended from English, Irish, and Danish ancestors according to their research. This puts a direct wrench into the cogs of many researchers trying to fit into the Edwards lore of many past families histories. Are we welsh? Who really knows. I can tell you that I know that I am directly descended to Joshua Edwards b.1781 son to Abel and Polly Potts Edwards. Some researchers have tied this specific Edwards family to the Cardiff Wales Edwards which is believed to have came to early America in New York. This is very early in the Abel and Polly Potts Edwards DNA research. The above doesn't mean any more than the following: The previous DNA submiters to me are not directly related to me at the 67 marker level(the most complete test to show direct relation). Does this mean we are not from Welsh descent? No. It just means that this Edwards family line has no matches as of yet to any other family that can prove descent from a family from Wales. As the data base grows of Edwards DNA submitters to the Genetic Migration I will be notified when the matches come. I will of course add this to the web-site. I am still trying to under stand them all. jje ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- October 2006 I have recieved my completed results from my DNA test trying to locate my paternal ancestors. It is in .pdf format DNAFileUploadedtoWebsiteOct06 When you open up the file you will notice that I added to the first part basic information concerning the results of the 'haplogroup' which is basically a code designating where my ancestors came from. Page number 4 of this file is basically the most important part of the file. It goes into detail where my genetic origion lies. Any Edwards of this line of Abel Edwards and Polly Potts will know the folklore or belief of their ancestry originating from Wales. It has been widely documented by researchers that this family came from Wales near the Cardiff area and they lived in a house called 'Edwards Hall'. It appears that this might not be true at least not in the close ancestors to Abel Edwards whom ever they might have been. I am still obsorbing this new information. It is very detailed and kind of hard to understand. I wanted to share the information with any family member that might find it enteresting. With these results came 29 other people that I have a common ancestor with. Unfortunatly it goes so far back (several hundreds of years) that the common ancestor between their ancestry and my ancestry (Abel edwards who married Polly Potts) are not tied together as of yet. In other words the common ancestor between Abel Edwards and the other matches might have been lost to time. At this time I am not wanting to add the names of these people because of their privacy. I have over the last 9 or so months recieved a couple of people who have matched with me. They are so distantly related that we are related from a common ancestor of about 500 or more years ago. With the extensive marker test that was done on my DNA (67 marker test) it is hopefully in the future that I can find a direct match within the 200 year span of our Edwards family in America.
