AP Stat Unit 3:  Gathering Data

Chapter 5:  Producing Samples and Designing Experiments

Chapter 6:  Classic Probability

The central idea of Chapter 5 is that proper experimental design is necessary to produce data that can be used to draw valid conclusions.  A major aspect of experimental design is random selection of subjects.  We will look as several ways to randomize a sample, the most important of which is the Simple Random Sample (SRS).  The chapter finishes with techniques for simulating samples to approximate probabilities experimentally (called empirical probabilities).

Chapter 6 looks at the formal rules for probability.  The important ideas to pick up here are how to calculate the probability of two events which might be independent or disjoint, and how to calculate conditional probability – where one event depends on another.
