| In social studies classes, students are taught how to view historical documents with a critical eye. Students analyze the documents and then focus on essential questions in order to draw conclusions about the role that geography and history have played and continue to play in our lives. Social studies education also focuses on teaching students how they can function effectively as members of South Middle School and ultimately as citizens of our democratic society. The social studies program at South Middle School mirrors the New York State standards. It is designed to provide the students and understanding of social, historical, geographic, economic and political elements of societies. Students are taught and encouraged to think logically, analytically and reflectively. Ultimately, this all should help the students to assume their roles as responsible citizens and active contributors to our country. |
