Here's alittle information about the project. I orignally bought my 1964 Jeep CJ5A in the late early 90's and drove it almost daily until 1995 at which time I mostly used it as a plow vehicle. The frame was bad and the body was getting really bad. I have always wanted to rebuild the Jeep when the time was right and when a frame became available. This spring I posted at message at www.rigidsteel.com hoping to find a frame. Well this summer I got an email from a fellow Vermonter who had a frame that he was going to junk, so if I was interested I could have it for $25. Well after looking at the pictures of the frame I decided that I would make the trip from Wilmington to New Haven to get the frame and the project began!
Getting my Jeep running! My Jeep hadn't been started for almost 2 years, I know, shame on me! Well after some new spark plugs and some fresh gas I got the old girl running as if I had been running it daily. The engine is the F4-134 4 cylinder, great little engines! Below is a few pictures of the Jeep before I started "tearing" it apart.
The first thing I wanted to do was to get the "new" frame ready. That meant using a drill with a wire brush to get as much of the rust off as possible. After that I put 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of chassis paint. I also had to install 4 new shackle bracket for the springs. Below is a before and after picture of the frame.
After the frame was ready I took the front and rear end out of my old Jeep, put them on the new frame and then started taking the body off my old Jeep to get to the engine to make it easier to remove. Below are a few pictures of this process.
Next was to build a tripod and remove the engine. After that I pressure washed the engine, bought some new mounts and installed it on the new frame. This is where I am right now as of September 16, 2004. I have ordered the parts I need to start doing the brakes and also the universal joints. As I progress I will ad more info and pictures.
Finally making some progress! I bought some tires and wheels and finally started getting some body parts in. Below are some pictures I took along the way.
