O.K., you are in Korea and you get into an accident off post. What do you do, oh what do you do....

Well do you know what Area you are in, Area I, II, III, IV???

In Area II (Seoul Area) Call the PMO at Yongsan, Phone# (02-7914-6695/4258/3008) 724-6695/4258/3008 (Off post #'s 02-797-4096/4097) and tell them that you were in an accident.

Off Post Accidents

Do not move your vehicle until the Korean National Police (KNP) get on the Accident Scene.
Have the Koreans call the Korean National Police.
Or you can call 112 and speak english to them and wait for a english speaking Korean.
Give the Korean Police your ID card, Drivers License and your SOFA card.
Try to have the Korean National Police mark the tires on all vehicles involved if they are still in place where the accident occurred.
If the KNP (Korean National Police) ask you to go with them, follow them to the Main Police station.
Wait at the KNP Police station for the Military Police to arrive. Now this might take a little while for the MP's to arrive. We are few in number and work as fast as we can. We know how the Korean Traffic Law (KRTL) works and we will help you in the best possible way.

What are your options when you
get into an accident in Korea???

Insurance settlement:

Exchange the following Information:
Insurance Info: Exchange Insurance Company names, policy numbers, phone numbers to insurance company.
Vehicle info: Make, Model, Year, Plate# to include everything on the plate, not just the numbers, include all characters.
Driver Info: Name, Drivers license number, and Phone numbers of the other Individuals involved.

Private Settlement:

Utilizing this opeion, both parties come to a private monetary settlement. This is the option you have to pay, or get paid cash for the damages to the vehicle's.
When you decide to do this it is out of the hands of the police to intervene.
We carry the forms with us when we go to an accident. You can be certain that when you decide this option it is the last you will hear about the accident. The matter is closed after this form has been signed.

Police Investigation:

Now a full case is just like the US (states).
We will collect all the information from all persons involved, take statements, and investigate the accident.
If you get charged in an accident by the Korean National Police (KNP), we will take you into our custody if you are Military. If you are a Civilian, we will ask you if you want us to take you into our custody. If you do not ask us to take you into our custody, you will stay with the Korean National Police. We will advise you that you are on International Hold until the matter has been settled. For Civilians, we will take custody of your Passport until the matter has been cleared from KNP. Then we will release you to your unit, Military or Civilian.

International JAG will be your point of contact if you are put on international hold.
Their #'s are 723-8250 (02-7913-8250).
