MAJOR FINDINGS 1.Assessed the congeners (non-ethanolic components) in arrack and coconut palm wine (toddy), two indigenous beverages of Kerala, India Congeners potentiate the toxicity produced by alcohol. Beverages excerts toxic effects on lipid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and liver functions of dams/fetus and is a major teratogenic agent than its equicaloric amount of ethanol.
