Laufrey-Reflection on the meaning of Justice
Justice, what is this imaginary term? Is justice
based on having a sense of equality far all people no
matter their race, skin color, or gender? If that is so let us give five
gold to all the people in a
village. Let my compatriots return after a week and see what has happened
to those five gold pieces. No one would have the same amount of gold.
Let me use the people I travel with to prove my point. Devorak would use
the money to buy a new sword to intimidate people. Jolan would have spent
the money at the local inn. I bet he would have enjoyed himself.
That is if he can remember much of the night. Mia would use her money to
try and make money. The new person I travel with Leonidas would save his
money until he needed it.
Where is the equality? Where is the justice? All
of these scenarios point to certain benefits. Devorak could be the bully
he has always been. Jolan would have had a good night. Mia might
have more money in her pouch. Leonidas would still have the five gold that
was given to him. Most of those are Knights of Justice, save one.
What am I standing for by wearing this uniform, this mask? Am I any better
than the person I was when I was a vagabond? Am I even bringing justice to
this town?
All I have done is hired a new man for our journeys. I
have not equalized things that much. The poor are still the poor and the
rich still the rich. I once heard a children's story about an outlaw
who stole from the rich to give to the poor. In a way he was equalizing
the money. He was bringing justice to the tyrannical, but we would have
hunted him. I bet Devorak would have hunted him down and flexed his
muscles at him. I bet that we would bring justice to an outlaw, because
the rich can afford to pay for us to drink, eat, and be merry. All this
while young babes go to sleep hungry. What about my family? What if
they were given justice as equality? Would they have had a trial?
Would they be alive? Where would I be right now?
