| In 1999, the Heritage Railway Group of North Bay Ontario, Canada embarked on a project to create a carousel. This carousel would join the Heritage Railway on North Bay's waterfront. An antique carousel was bought, but this carousel had long had its horses sold off to collectors. So 42 new horses were needed. In the spring of 1999 John Groom volunteered to carve one of the horses. A horse patterned after a 1890's style horse carved by Charles Llooff. In the summer of 1999, 130 board feet of Basswood was ordered and in November 1999 work began. You can follow the work in progress at the following link: Carving The Carousel Horse. |
