Feel Another Side of Nature

john harms 3/27/98

I walk down the sidewalk, it’s a mild, warm day,
I look up at the sky. It is not its usual happy, deep blue self.
It is all gray and gloomy. But not just one shade of gray,

not just one variation,

Dark gray, light gray, slate gray, stone gray.

Whatever you want to call the various grays,

it's still gloomy.
So unhappy.
So depressing.
So dull.
So ugly.

The birds in the trees don't seem to sing as happy as usual.
The sun isn't shining,
things around us just aren't the same anymore.
I hear the wind blowing through the trees,

but it seems like the trees' songs are not so joyful,
not so moving anymore.

I don't want to lay on the green grass and see this.
But wait a minute,
Drops of water start falling from the sky during this warm summer.

they hit the ground below,
they too have their own song.
It's not as pretty as the other songs I have heard,
but it is also soothing.

The water drops, they call it rain, some people don't like whatever it is.

Some people get upset when this happens,
When nature ruins their plans for a sunny clear day.
I sometimes get upset when this happens
But as I listen to its song, it sounds nice.
It has its own, constantly changing rhythm.
I sit alone and listen to its song,
without any other distractions.
It sounds kind of relaxing,

soothing in a way.

Instead of listening to the birds, I watch them.
They wait for the rain to stop, then they go back to singing.
It's like their songs are put to sleep by the rain.
