Last Time Lost

I ran a mile today, or was it two.
I ran as fast as I could
just to see you before
you were supposed to go.

I got to your doorstep
but you weren’t there –
you were already gone.

Tears break on the cold cement and
I hear birds in the distance,
singing their love songs,
making love songs,
just as we had done before.

My beating heart hits me.
I realize now
that we will never make songs together again,
and the only thing I regret
is that we weren’t able
to play our last note.
