Seit 1988 hat er eine Professur an der Kunstakademie in Duesseldorf. Im intensiven Austausch mit Fachleuten fuer Holzverarbeitung experimentiert er mit einem fuer ihn neuen Werkstoff auf der Grundlage von Holz. Die staendige Suche nach neuem Material, die Analyse von dessen Qualitaeten und das Ausloten seiner Moeglichkeiten sind eine wichtige Basis von Craggs kuenstlerischem Vorgehen. ..
Das ist fuer mich nicht nur ein optischer Kontrast, sondern auch eine Wertvorstellung. " Seine Skulpturen nennt Tony Cragg "eine Antwort auf die kuenstlich gemachte Welt". Kunststoff ist ein wunderbares Material, es wird von Menschen hergestellt, kommt nicht aus der Natur und gehorcht dem Willen des Menschen. Urspruenglich war es ein Ersatzmaterial fuer Natur, aber heute ist Plastik eigenstaendig geworden. Mit diesem Grundelement menschlicher Gebrauchsgegenstaende, Jahrtausende alt, begibt sich der Kuenstler auf eine Reise in die Welt der Formen und versucht verborgene Strukturen und Energien sichtbar zu machen.
