The Rules
1--For each Big Ten game, you may assign a weight between 15 and 50 points. That’s it. If you pick the game correctly, you get the weight in points. If you pick the game incorrectly, you lose the weight in points. You could give every game 50 points, every game 15 points, 2 games 30 points and then 49—48—and 47 points for the other three games. It doesn’t matter. Do whatever you want.
The only potential weirdness comes if you make all picked games worth 50 points. That scenario is discussed in rule 62—Most points wins the matchup. Poolers play each other in head to head matchups. The
four best won-loss records for head to head matchups get to go to the playoffs.3—You just need to get your picks in before tipoff of the first game in a given matchup. You don’t have to turn in your picks for the entire week all at once. You can get picks in for the Tuesday/Wednesday games and then send in a second set of picks for the weekend games. It’s up to you. Again, simplicity is our doctrine. Simplicity is our gospel.
You may not, under any circumstances, look at another pooler’s picks and then submit your own, even if the picks you viewed did not belong to your opponent for the given matchup. You may not receive information about another pooler’s picks from a third party, including another pooler.5--Your picks should be emailed to the following address:
The password is "[confidential]"
6—To avoid having a string of matchups where poolers lay it all on the line and put up nothing but 50’s as weights for all games, we must add to the level of risk for doing so; thus, rule 6 deals only with situations where a pooler or poolers intend(s) to have NO Big Ten games weighted below 50 for a given matchup. [Note: This will also be applied if both poolers in a given matchup have identical weights for a given matchup (not necessarily applied to the same Big Ten games) that have a mean value of over 45 points. This stipulation exists to deter poolers from seeking obvious loopholes to the following rules.]
--Incorrectly picked games will be triple penalized (In other words, instead of being docked 50 points, the pooler will be docked 150 points for an incorrect pick)
--No tiebreakers (discussed below) will be administered if a tie occurs after regulation. Instead, the poolers will have their names alphabetized by last name. We will then look at the day of the month on which the last Big Ten game of the matchup was played. If the day of the month is an odd numbered day, then the pooler with the first alphabetically listed name is given a bonus point and declared the winner. If the day of the month is an even numbered day, then the pooler with the second alphabetically listed name is given a bonus point and declared the winner. [NOTE: If it appears that this is being done to create an aberrant mood for picking nothing but 50’s, then good. That’s the idea. Use tact! All 50’s isn’t tact. But go for it if so inclined]
7--Tiebreakers:
We will award an extra point for every game correctly picked in the matchup if the matchup is tied at the end of regulation. If the matchup is still tied then the tie is broken by applying the following considerations in the following order until the tie is broken . . .
a—What was the most points received from a single game? (one bonus point goes to the pooler who has the most points from a single game) . If the tie remains, repeat this for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and (if possible) 5th most points received from a single game until the tie is broken.
b—What was the combined overall season record (not Big Ten Conference play record) of the two teams who played in the game that had the most points weighted on it? It doesn’t matter if the game was correctly picked or not. (one bonus point goes to the pooler who has the teams with the best combined record---We take the best combined record first if a pooler has two games with an equal weight). If the tie remains, repeat this for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and (if possible) 5th most highly weighted games until the tie is broken.
c—If the tie still remains, then each pooler must select and weight
eight NBA games that will be completed no more than 74 hours after the finish of the last Big Ten game played in the matchup. The matchup will be scored regularly. A single point will be awarded to the pooler who wins this tiebreaker matchup. This second set of picks must be emailed to the pool email account. Poolers should use the same weighting system we use for picking Big Ten games. In other words, each of the 8 NBA games should be weighted 15-50 (and rule 6 does apply here as well).8--Not turning in picks
If you don’t turn in your picks then you
automatically lose the matchup unless you sent a declarative email to the pool email account that was received prior to the tipoff of the first Big Ten game in the matchup. Your score will be recorded as the opposite value of your opponent’s score provided that your opponent scored in positive figures. If your opponent scored in negative numbers, then you will be given a score of one point less than your opponent. The declarative email must declare that you intend to take the opposite of your opponent’s picks. You cannot split a matchup between games you wish to pick and games you wish to take the opposite of with respect to your opponent. You must either pick the games for the given matchup, or declare that you will take the opposite of ALL of your opponent’s picks. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT YOU CANNOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, VIEW ANY POOLER’S PICKS PRIOR TO A DECLARATIVE EMAIL BEING SENT.If you turn in your picks late, then the games that started before your picks were turned in are automatically scored as losses.
If you don’t turn in picks for a game
[OR GAMES] but do turn in picks for the other games in a matchup, then you get a negative 50 for all unpicked games. If you fail to turn in picks for all games in a matchup, then this rule is trumped by the declarative statement rule in the first paragraph under "Not turning in picks"If both you and your opponent don’t turn in picks for
a matchup without sending in declarative emails, then both of you get losses. Your scores will be recorded as –251 each.If both you and your opponent turn in declarative emails, then you both get the opposite of the pick(s) sent in by your next opponent (This rule is changed to "previous" opponent for the last regular season matchup of the year and for any playoff matchups.) We keep going to subsequent (or previous) opponents until we find picks.
Turning in your picks with a weight assigned to a game that is out of the 15-50 range . . .
. . . will result in the game being
scored as a -50.9--The playoffs
For seeding playoff POOLERSs or determining playoff qualifiers, the following criteria will be used:
a. Won-loss record
(The remaining criteria are to break ties for
identical won-loss records)
b. head to head competition
c. overall point differential between two POOLERs in head to head competition (Used only if two POOLERs played twice during regular season and split their MATCHUPs)
d. won-loss record against all other playoff POOLERs
e. won-loss record against regular season pool winner
f. most total points scored during regular season
g. coin toss
Note: IF MORE THAN TWO POOLERS ARE TIED, THEN CRITERIA "B" WILL BE USED BETWEEN THE POOLERS THAT ARE TIED (HEAD TO HEAD RECORDS COMPILED ONLY BY MATCHUPS WHERE TIED TEAMS PLAYED OTHER TIED TEAMS. SUBSEQUENT CRITERIA {"C", "D", ETC.} MAY BE EMPLOYED AS NEEDED TO BREAK TIES THAT MAY OCCUR WITHIN THIS GROUPING OF TIED POOLERS)
10—Our pool has eight participants. Poolers will play each other twice for a 14 matchup regular season. The top 4 poolers will move on to the post season. Seedings determined by the aforementioned standards will create a single matchup semifinal round where pooler #1 plays pooler #4 and pooler #2 plays pooler #3. The winners of the semifinals play in a best of three matchup series for the Big Ten Pool Championship (2003 Champion=Mary Beth Jacobson; 2004 Champion=Brett Alberty).
