The overall plan xx Training goes in reverse chronological order!xx Core
| Ideas . . . (with the actual follow through noted at the ***'s along the way.) Saturday=40 minute run-49:15 I actually did a 40 minute run in Champaign, out amongst the north side sprawl . . . all of which was open field back in the day---So I'm at 49:15! Monday-Swim AM and bike PM--50:45 Nothing shall occur today. I woke up with a sore throat and what felt like (but technically wasn't) a fever. I'm at work right now. You know, I really just want to get to 50 hours so that I can relax, get what I can get out of the next two weeks, and then saddle up for the 8 month push. Grandma died If there's nothing but an underlined, italicized triple asterisk . . . with no follow up . . . then there was no training. I'll report when I can. Tuesday--Bike two hours somehow--52:45 Nothing. Met with the funeral director Wednesday=swim AM/Run 45 minutes PM---54:00 -- Ran 50 minutes in the AM. Eleven degrees when I left, 13 degrees when I finished. So I'm at 50:05 for the November/December window. Thursday--Bike 90 minutes=55:30 ***The service was very nice. Lots of people. Friday--Swim/Bike for a total of two hours=57:30 Ran for 43 minutes, walked for 5 minutes due to some crampiness int he right calf, massaged/walked it out---and then ran for 3 more minutes. Should be fine. I'm a calf crampin' kind of dude, I guess. Acceptance makes it all go down easier. So I'm at 50:51 for the window. Saturday--Merry XMas Eve! Run 45 minutes=58:15 Partied my ass off. Sunday=Merry XMas! Bike an hour=59:15 Partied my ass off some more. Merry Boxing Day!!! Swim and/or run and/or bike an hour=60:15. In some respects, the suckiness of '05 got a head start on me, one year ago today. I must admit, that as much as I've grown in this past year, I'll be happy to see its fucking ass out the door! Christ almighty, what a fucked up year in so many ways. In so many other ways, it was amazing---but it will soon be over. Hopped on the Zurich, which I've been keeping down here at Mom's, and rode for an hour in front of CNN Headline News.----51:51 for the window So what do you do with yourself now that you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want? Money's solid, you're kind of old--but not too old, you're set in a comfortable job that you love that (along with the more significant end of the partnership) provides for the constant addition to the now well established nest egg, and you have the ability to manipulate very healthy amounts of free time. You have responsibilities with family to attend to, but those should get easier rather than more difficult in the coming months. I think a good thing to do is to hunker down . . . one way or the other . . during Beth's tax season. What can 4 months of total commitment to training and writing bring you in the spring? Play with that for a while. In the meantime, we're just a tad more than 48 hours away from the most important college basketball game ever played- Southeast Missouri State University (the wife's alma mater) vs. the University of Illinois (my alma mater). I need to embrace some shallowness for a while. Yesterday was the saddest Christmas I've ever known. My Grandmother equates to Christmas in my mind, and she very obviously wasn't there. We had a good time, but it was heavy with sadness amidst all the joking around and eating and partying. What can commitment to purpose, of any kind, bring you? It's a question well worth contemplating. The 27th will be spent in Alvin, Illinois. No training. The 28th will be spent in Champaign (and the most important college basketball game ever played will be that evening). Maybe I can get in a 45 minute run that day on one of the old courses. --I don't think it's going to happen. I'm here now, and I did a pretty shitty job of packing. Couldn't find anything this morning--and sleep really was the order of the day. Tonight's the big game!!! Or maybe I'll need to get a run or two in while in Cincy . . . or a quick bike ride on the 29th before flying to Cincy on the 30th. Either way, I should get to 61 hours. Obviously, I won't be getting to 61 hours, which is fine, since it was all gravy anyway. There's something cool about 51:51. It'll work. |

Was out last night to Stever's surprise 40th party and the Flamingo party. Good times. Didn't get home until 3:30 AM. Yow! Too old for that kind of thing, at least more often than once a month. Anyway, the ride was nice. Good rhythym.

Saturday, December 10th: Sorry Steve, et al . . . had to ride. 90 minutes in front of some TDF and some bad talk sports show on WMLW ('The Sideline' or some shit). Actually spent the first half hour or so wearing the earpiece and catching up with Scott "Mad Dog" Maddux, the 1986 IHSA Class A XC state champ, tux wearer in the Jacobson wedding, and all around master of the universe.

Monday, December 5th: There's something weird going on in my right shoulder. No Sunday training. Got up Monday and hit 19.7 miles in front of a stupid episode of "The West Wing." I'm now officially cheering for it to get canceled.

Friday, December 2nd: This is my confession: I've been an aquatic slacker. This is my resolution: I will stop the slackerness. 35 Masters swim minutes. On Monday, we play for keeps. I stay in the damn pool for the full damn hour and get my damn ass in damn gear.
So I'm at 32:25 going into Friday night. If I have a 3 hour day on Saturday and another 3 hour day on Sunday, then that would kick royal ass = 38:25. On the other hand, man . . . that's a lot. And it will all be on the trainer (mind you). It would also give me like a 13 hour week, which would be pretty good as well. I could go with two "Band of Brothers" episodes on Saturday and then follow that up with some TDF footage or some 'Arrested Development' stuff. Then I could switch out the "Band of Brothers" for the next two episodes and maybe do the same thing on Sunday . . . . or should I just go two hours on Sunday???
Regardless, I'm in the mood to play; thus, I don't know that I see any real riding tonight. Ooooh, maybe I could run an hour in there at some point over the weekend to break it all up a little????
| Bike miles for the week=83.6 | Run miles for the week=6.6 | Swim time for the week=1:13 | Training time for the week=7:07 | Total training time for November/December=32:25 [New Goal=61 hours] |

Wednesday, November 30th: The new motto with the running is, "Fuck it, I'm running." In that spirit, then, I ran 53 minutes and then followed that up with a steady tempo ride of 28.8 miles (1:40) in front of some news and episode 3 of "Band of Brothers"
| Bike miles for the week=58.4 | Run miles for the week=6.6 | Swim time for the week=0:38 | Total training time for November=30:15 |
| Oooops! No training today (Tuesday the 29th of November). Couldn't sleep last night, slept in on the honor of hitting a two hour ride this afternoon . . . . got a call from Beth at work. We both forgot that we're volunteering at the ARCW function tonight. Ice runners! Yeah baby. I'll make it up later in the week. |
**********
Monday, November 28th: AM--38 minutes of masters swim. I have good technique but a terrible breakdown threshold. Time to get to work on that. The "less than one hour" sessions are now finished.
PM--Went 1:46 in front of some random TV, Seinfeld, and episode 2 of "Band of Brothers." Good ride.
| Bike miles for the week=29.6 | Run miles for the week=0 | Swim time for the week=0:38 | Total training time for November=27:42 |
| OK, so here's the plan. I'll arrive back in Milwaukee later today (Sunday, November 27th) and get back to training tomorrow. I've got 25:18 for November. The original plan is for 35 November training hours and then 20 December training hours which gives me a combined 55 November/December training hours. How about this? I aim for 61 November/December training hours? That's 6 more training hours total, just spread out over the full two months. To do it, I'll need to have lots of 2-3 hour days (because there's a lot of travel and whatnot this next month). That's the plan. |
| No training on Thanksgiving. Swam 43 minutes, water ran 17 minutes, and rode for 21 minutes (5.7 miles . . . I had no damn fan! I was going to detonate!) on Friday. I've got 25:18 for the month. And I have a plan for the rest of 2005! But that's for later. |
| The past 24 hours have been crazy regarding family stuff. Beth and I cranked out work on the big 'Trust' endeavor until well past midnight. I slept in and looked toward getting some bike time this afternoon, but work was insane and Grandpa had to make an unexpected trip to the hospital (which he's now back from) which necessitated all sorts of phone calling and whatnot. Maybe 35 hours isn't going to happen? Maybe this November was meant to be a 30-35 hour month. We'll see. Regardless, I'm not going to kill myself to get five hours of training (for a month block) when I'm still 9+ months away from the big day. The circumstances of my life right now just don't permit it. Maybe 35 hours will happen, maybe it won't. Either way, I'm cool. I got all the "Trust" stuff in the mail and then, ironically, got the call about Grandpa when walking back to work from the Post Office. Sometimes there are just . . . . days . . . . and sometimes there are just years. And sometimes, you eat prime rib for Thanksgiving |

Tuesday, November 22nd: AM--Rode in front of episode 1 of "Band of Brothers," and a little bit of the '01 TDF (through the summary of stage 1).
PM--Coming!
| Bike miles for the week=52 | Run miles for the week=0 | Swim time for the week=0.40 | Total training time for November=23:57 |

Monday, November 21st: AM--Masters swim. I've lost a little here, but I'll get it back
PM--22 miles of riding in front of two more episodes of AD and a little '01 TDF which I'm going to start now. Felt good . . . and we got an inversion table today! Beth brought it home and we set it up.
Time to crank it up for tomorrow and Wednesday.
| Bike miles for the week=22 | Run miles for the week=0 | Swim time for the week=0:40 | Total training time for November=22:06 |

Sunday, November 20th: Fuck it. I'll just run once a week and do a little water running here and there. Other than that, I'll ride. I had some great years, but I've moved heaven and earth for this motherfucking calf issue and I'm just about motherfucking at my motherfucking wit's fucking end. Fuck this motherfucking shit. I ran for 45 minutes, the calf bothered me the whole way. So be it----1:48.9, 3:41.8, 4:02.8, 8:48.6, 14:01.1, 29:57.3, 2:36:20. That's a wrap folks. I run only to serve the purpose of doing an IM. I hereby declare that I'm now seeking to get away with as little of it as possible. So anyway, 45 minutes, which I enjoyed. I just ignored the calf . . . which kind of helped. It's sore as a motherfucker right now, but I don't care anymore. I just don't fucking care anymore. This is simply ridiculous. My calf problems are well over 2 grand into my wallet right now . . . and with barely anything to show for it. So I'm done . . . not with running . . . just with caring about my calf. I like cycling better anyway.
I'm looking at doing some riding in front of football this afternoon.
| Bike miles for the week=84.1 | Run miles for the week=5.8 | Swim time for the week=1.08 | Total training time for November=20.16 |

Saturday, November 19th: Rode for an hour and a half at good tempo in front of another episode of AD and then the rest of the D-Day documentary. Felt good. My trainer riding is feeling real good.
| Bike miles for the week=84.1 | Run miles for the week=0 | Swim time for the week=1.08 | Total training time for November=19:31 |

Friday, November 18th: Mad props to the little brother. He's a Dad! Sarah Beatrix Jacobson, born yesterday!
On a far less important note, I went on the bike for just under 25 miles in front of more 'Arrested Development' (loaned to me by Jeff, ironically, and some 'American Experience' D-Day documentary which is pretty darn good.
| Bike miles for the week=55.1 | Run miles for the week=0 | Swim time for the week=1.08 | Total training time for November=18:01 |

Thursday, 11-17: Overslept. Had pizza with JRC last night and was out kind of late (for me). It was fun to just sit around and talk 'running shop' for two hours--but then I can home and fell asleep without setting an alarm. The internal clock woke me at 6 AM=Too late to ride. That's OK. I'll just hammer it all that much more this weekend. How's this for a goal for tomorrow (looking toward 23:20 by the end of the day on Sunday)=AM=Masters swim--At least 45 minutes. Come home and ride for two hours in AM.
PM??? Running will be a 'call it at that time' thing as the left calf is still slightly shaky (but far from being terrible . . . which is why I'm reticent to push it). At the very least, I want 90 more minutes of volume which would put me at 20:54 for the month.
**********
Wednesday, November 16th: AM--Masters swim. Felt good, but a little dull (which is probably the result of not swimming much these past two weeks).
PM--Rode in front of season one of "Arrested Development" (I've now watched the first two episodes and it's awesome). Felt good. It's cold as shit outside.
| Bike miles for the week=30.3 | Run miles for the week=0 | Swim time for the week=1.08 | Total training time for November=16:39 |

Tuesday, November 15th: Happy Medicare D day! Good Lord. No ride last night. Beth and I ended up getting into this marathon session on the various dealings regarding our POA duties. It sounds bad, but it's really not. It's simply challenging, on various levels . . . too many to describe in writing. We're close to making some big decisions that will serve everyone the best, though. The bike ride was the casualty, and now I'm screwed because we were up so late that the 5 AM alarm very nearly met with a free flight through the bedroom windown.. No fucking way. I slept. So now I've got parent teacher conferences tonight and more of the marathon tonight with Beth when she picks me up for dinner. Put another way, I'll be at just over 14 hours for the month at the end of the day today. "Pace" for the 35 hour week would be 17:30. I'm three hours behind. If I could be at 23:20 by the end of the day on Sunday, then I'm on pace. How do I get there? Let's try this . . .
| Wednesday: AM=40 minutes of Masters swim. PM=30 minute run followed by 1 hour ride----16:21 total Thursday: 1 hour ride! Get it done!---17:21 total Friday: AM=50 minutes of Masters swim followed by a 40 minute run; PM=2 hour ride!-------20:51 total Saturday=One hour and nine minute ride--------22 hours total Sunday=40 minute run followed by 40 minute ride---23:20 total!!! |

Monday, November 14th: AM--Masters swim for a half hour. Felt good. Will go to 40 minutes on Wednesday.
| Bike miles for the week=0 | Run miles for the week=0 | Swim time for the week=0.30 | Total training time for November=14:11 |
| Plan for the week . . . . Monday: Masters swim in AM (30-40 minutes on the comeback trail) and 90 minute ride in the PM. One hour ride in the AM on Tuesday (Parent-teacher conferences in PM) Masters swim in the AM on Wednesday followed by (twingy right calf allowing) a 30-40 minute run followed by an hour ride in the PM (And then dinner with JRC) Thursday: Hour ride in AM and PT conferences in PM Friday: Masters swim in AM (No school today). Follow this with an hour or so ride and then (hopefully) a 30-40 minute run in the PM. Much sweetness would be the state of the training if I could have 21 hours going INTO the weekend! |

Sunday, November 13th: Rode in front of football while talking to Corless on the earpiece. I lost today in the Pick 'em Pool. First loss of the season.
| Bike miles for the week=96.2 | Run miles for the week=11 | Swim time for the week=0.30 | Total training time for November=13:41 |

Saturday, November 12th: No training yesterday. What does clinical depression feel like? Ran for 30 minutes. The right calf had mild tightness (no explosion) so I walked it in. I need to be careful. How about 3 days of 40 minutes this week? Forget the long term plan. Let's just simmer down now. Then I rode for about 40 minutes. I'm in major low motivation mode.
| Bike miles for the week=70.8 | Run miles for the week=11 | Swim time for the week=0:30 | Total training time for November=12:08 |

Thursday, November 10th: AM--40 minute run. Am I a runner again? I think I sort of am. I'm resting this damn shoulder.
PM--Acupuncture. I found out that Levi died.
And, for the record, since one day I'll want to look back upon it and remember when it happened, I was fully severed from the 'club' last night. Instead of a conference call to secure a donation, I received a call from 'Arnie' telling me that they're "consolidating their fundraising efforts." He thanked me for my work and effectively revoked my standing. That's what I get for a quarter million bucks in one month. It's fairly clear to me that they were never willing to forgive me for what went down in September. Or maybe he's telling me the truth. Maybe they're just moving everything in house. I don't know. Maybe the problem is me. Conspiracy theories abound in my bloodstream. But it seems pretty weird. I honestly thought he was going to offer me a full time job . . . . right before he essentially fired me. MoveOn has moved on as it were. I'm dumbfounded . . . . and, for all practical purposes . . . I'm totally and completely cut off from professional politics. I wouldn't know how to get 'back in' if I wanted to . . . which is fortunate since I absolutely and totally don't want to. A hurricane hit the Gulf Coast at the end of the summer and claimed a shitload of victims. Either by my own hand or by fate or by . . . . whatever . . . on a much, much less serious level, I'm now a notch in the casualty column.
This year continues to be perhaps the most extraordinary I've known. I'm not sure what it all means . . . but I'm somehow . . . . some way . . . just calm about it all.
Time for some . . . . .

Tuesday, November 8th: Well, I ran 20 minutes. I was going to run more, but I got this dizzy, loopy, bonky feeling (right after stopping in a park to pee) and barely got my ass upstairs. Beth basically fed me and brought me stuff to drink for 20 minutes. I got into the shower (I was freezing), warmed up, dried off, lied down at around 6 PM . . . . and now it's 1:30 AM on Wednesday and I'm writing this. Totally weird.

Monday, November 7th: AM--Masters swim. Went a half hour. The shoulder is pain free but weak.

Sunday, November 6th: Ran 35 minutes up Old Airport Rd. and around the prison and back. Felt good. Blew off the ride, which puts me behind. So I'll try to get after it this week. I'm going to leave the Zurich at Mom's place and just trainer ride the Serotta for a couple weeks.

Thursday, November 3rd: George Bush and Teddy Kennedy gave me a long lunch hour today (standardized testing for all 10th graders) so I took them up on it and ran 35 minutes! I think I'm going to alter the run progression from here. Instead of the (x+1) format of increasing weekly distance, I'm just going to a flat 5 minute bump. I've made a diagram below.
| Bike miles for the week=40.6 | Run miles for the week=7.4 | Swim time for the week=0:32 | Total training time for November=3:34 |

Monday, November 1st: AM--Rode for 1:15 (20.6 miles) in front of "The West Wing" et al. Felt good. Good base riding. Will look to start doing some tempo-ish stuff soon enough. MD--Snuck home after a rousing morning of Bush inspired standardized testing for a 29 minute run. To this end, I am a fan of NCLB. Educationally, it's still horribly irresponsible.

| November is the month to get after it somewhat. 35 hours in 30 days with lots of planned (and perhaps some unplanned) breaks. Let's look at things for the next several days: Tuesday, November 1st--AM=90 minutes on trainer (just base riding). PM--29 minute run [~ 2 hours total] Wednesday, November 2nd--AM=Masters swim (Projected time=45 minutes). PM--Hard to say. Big conference call at 5 o'clock. Probably best to not schedule anything. Thursday, November 3rd--AM=90 minutes on trainer. PM= 35 minute run (Yeah baby!) I need to get this run in before the other conference call of the week. [~4:50 total] Friday, November 4th--AM=Masters swim (Projected time= full hour). PM--Travel down to Cornell. Saturday, November 5th--35 minute run followed by at least a one hour ride. [7:25 total] Sunday, November 6th--Minimum of 2 hours of riding. [9:25 total] |
