Welcome to the 2003 Baseball Game Picking Pool!!!
Here are the contestants . . . .
John Boudry
, Engineer, Former quarters playing teammate and L’Hopital’s rule discussion partner to the pool administrator. Most educated person in the pool—but don’t call him "Doctor B"Andy Carey
, Teacher, Co-founder of the Stearns School Road Society, Toys R Us shopping partner of the pool administrator. Hit longest home run in Northbrook Little League history "back in the day." Oldest guy in the pool, which is why you should fear him.Royce Huffman
, Teacher, Co-founder of the Stearns School Road Society, Toys R Us shopping partner of the pool administrator. Has a real life and operational basketball scoreboard in his bachelor pad which automatically wins him "cool pooler" award.John Jacobson
, Teacher, The Pool Administrator. Chicks dig him because he rarely wears underwear. Co-Founder of the Stearns School Road Society. Once got lost at Toys R Us. Guilty of using a box of Grape Nuts as a fire hazard in his dorm room.Robby McCabe
, Swim Coach, Friend of and swim coach (one of two) to the pool administrator—which is a nice way of saying "pain deliverer" to the pool administrator. Youngest guy in the pool, which will no doubt get him a fair share of ribbing—but he can take it.Mike Schommer
, CPA, Former college roommate of pool administrator. Was on double secret probation with Mr. Boudry "back in the day." Former swimmer, which may help him get inside McCabe’s head. Also played on the same quarters team as the pool administrator. If you say, "Speak the truth, brother," to me then I say the following to youà This will be good. After last year, we may all need a reason to motivate us to care about baseball. Hopefully, this will be it.
The idea behind this pool is that we all play each other in head to head matchups.
The two poolers with the best regular season records will play each other in a best of five championship series for the pool title. Here are the rules . . .
1--
You will pick 12 National League games per week (4 games from those scheduled on Tuesday and/or Wednesday, 4 games from those scheduled on Thursday and/or Friday, and 4 games from those scheduled on Saturday and/or Sunday). You never pick games that are scheduled on Monday.2—
Each set of 4 games picked is called a matchup. We use the word matchup to refer to the fact that two poolers are competing against one another. You compete against another pooler in a matchup by picking actual baseball games.3—
The four games you pick for each matchup must involve 8 different baseball teams.4—
How do you score points in a matchup? It’s based on total run differential of the 4 games picked. Let’s say that you pick the Los Angeles Dodgers to beat the Cincinnati Reds. The Dodgers actually beat the Reds by a score of 5 to 3. You get the difference in runs scored which would equal 2 in this case. We add up your points over the course of the four games you picked. This sum will be your total for the matchup. Here’s an example . . . Let’s say you pick the following games and we get the following results . . . .|

Yes, you can score negative points. The pooler with the most points in a matchup wins.
NOTE: If there is a rained out game among the four games picked by a pooler, then the corresponding game is eliminated from consideration for the pooler’s matchup opponent. "Corresponding" refers to the listing order of the games picked (assuming that only one pooler picked the rained out game). In other words, if the Montreal vs. St. Louis game listed above did not make it to complete game status due to weather or any other postponing factor, then your opponent would have his third listed game removed from consideration (assuming that your opponent had not picked the Montreal v St. Louis game). The matchup would be based on the results of 3 chosen games instead of 4. If a game is called before the ninth inning but is considered a complete game by major league baseball standards, then the final score of the complete game remains the final score that will be considered for our pool. It stands to reason that some postponed games will be rescheduled for later in the season. You may pick games only from those scheduled on the National League schedule as it is listed below. Should a rescheduled game be inserted as the second game of a doubleheader (thus changing the original starting time of the originally scheduled game) then the game you are eligible to pick on that day is the originally scheduled game (not the second game of the updated schedule doubleheader).
5--
Here are the tiebreakers (enforced in the following order) that will be used for matchups that end in a tie . . . .a--Best W-L record of the four games picked (In other words, did one pooler pick the games 3-1 over another pooler who may have only gone 2-2? It would be possible to do this and still have identical point scores)
b—Best single point game of the four picked, second best . . . ., third best . . . . , fourth best
c—Overall record of the 8 teams involved after the games have been played (Best overall record of chosen 8 teams wins. This subtly encourages you to pick games involving better teams).
d—If the tie still exists then the a and b process remains until the next matchup is played. The c tiebreaker is not considered in the next matchup. This next matchup does not need to involve the same two poolers. It would be just the next matchup played. If the tie occurs on the last matchup of the regular season (or game 5 of the pool championship series) then we look at the next to last matchup played under the same conditions. We continue to go backwards in the schedule until the tie is broken. This rule is only one of several reasons why it is imperative that a pooler not look at his opponent’s picks until after he has turned in his own picks. Again, we are all about the honor system.
6—
We’ll assume that everyone will get their picks in before the games being picked are played. There is no hard due date. If the time stamp on your email or voice message is after the start of a picked game, then that game will be scored as a loss, regardless of what the pooler picked (This would also hold if you accidentally picked a second game in a matchup involving the same team. Remember, the four games you pick in a given matchup must involve 8 different baseball teams). You may turn your picks in by email . . . .--Go to
http://www.yahoo.com--Click on "Email"
--Username= thebaseballpool
--Password= ************
You should always put the matchup number(s) in the subject box of the email. This way, your opponent won’t accidentally look at your picks until AFTER he has sent in his own picks.
Also, be certain to clearly label the dates of the games being played so that we don’t get confused.
NOTE: If you’re in a jam and can’t get to a computer, then just phone someone in the pool and give your picks to them so that they can email them in on your behalf. I’ll volunteer my voice mail (You may want to write it down) as
(414) ***-****. If anyone else would care to do the same, that would be great. As long as your picks are in before the games start for the matchup in question, then we’re cool7—
You may turn your picks in once per week, for the next month, every other day, it doesn’t matter. Again, clearly label what games you’re choosing and the date or dates on which they’re being played. The one rule to keep in mind is this: You must pick all four games for a given matchup at the same time. You cannot pick 2 games of a matchup on Tuesday and then the other two on Wednesday. If it’s Tuesday morning and you wish to pick three games that will be played on Wednesday along with one game that will be played on Tuesday . . . then all four of your picks must be submitted at once on Tuesday. Again, you can make all of your picks for the next month. It doesn’t matter, but you must make your picks in blocks of 4 games. It doesn’t matter when you turn in your picks so long as you get them in before the games are played. If it’s Tuesday night and you didn’t get your picks in for your matchup, just pick four games being played on Wednesday. Important: Once again, in your emailed picks, make sure that you label what matchup #’s you are picking. Please put this information in the subject box of the email. We operate on the honor system. Do not look at your opponent’s picks if you haven’t turned your picks in for a given matchup.8—
If you fail to get your picks in for a matchup then you must take the opposite picks of the pooler you are playing in the matchup. It is possible under this system to beat your matchup opponent without making any picks.9—
If both poolers in a matchup fail to make picks then each pooler gets the opposite picks made by the poolers who were their last opponents. Example: Royce and I both fail to get our picks for our matchup against one another. The last pooler I played was Mike. The last pooler Royce played was Andy. I get the opposite of Mike’s picks and Royce gets the opposite of Andy’s picks. Rules 8 and 9 are just to keep the pool moving forward. Rules 8 and 9 are meaningless if you get your picks in on time.10—
The Pool Championship series is a best of five between the best two records at the end of the regular season. The regular season is 44 matchups long (See schedule below) Should there be a tie between two or more poolers, we use the following criteria to break the tie:a—Won-Loss percentage in head to head matchups involving the tied poolers
b—Won-Loss percentage of each tied pooler against the highest finishing pooler that is not a part of the tie (If the tie remains then we continue with this process to the next highest finishing pooler that is not a part of the tie and so on and so on)
c—Most points scored for the season
d—Point differential for the season
e—We roll dice
