BINGHAMTON, NY -- Denis Hamel scored in overtime to give the Binghamton
Senators a 4-3 triumph over the Philadelphia Phantoms on Saturday. Hamel, who
finished with two points in the contest, put a pass from Antoine Vermette
behind goaltender Antero Niittymaki 3:56 into the extra session for his sixth
game-winner of the season. Vermette had a goal and two assists and Jason Spezza recorded his league-leading 69th assist for Binghamton, which has won four of its last five and moved two points ahead of Philadelphia for
first place in the East Division. Ray Emery turned aside 11 of the 12 shots he
faced in the third period and finished with 27 saves, raising his record to
20-18-4. Niittymaki stopped all 14 shots that came his way over the first 20
minutes and made 39 total saves in the hard-luck loss. Jon Sim scored twice for his fourth two-goal game this month and both Joni Pitkanen and R.J.
Umberger registered two assists for the Phantoms, who fell to just 19-3-2-1
when leading after one period.
