Johnny Cockayne [1] for VPS
Election Address

It is often said that if anyone wants to stand for office, he should be immediately disqualified from doing so. That being the case why should you vote for me?

The first thing to say is that I am not a member of the SRC, I am not coming into this election on the back of a life in EUSA politics, and I am not coming into this in order to further a political agenda. Instead I am running because I feel I can make a difference.

During my spell here in Edinburgh I have worked in Teviot, the Pleasance and in King's Buildings, and it's probably fair to say I have the Unions in my blood. I have seen them from all sides of the spectrum: punter, steward, bar staff, and ents; and I would like to think  that in the time I have built up an idea of what works and what doesn't.

My goal would be to strengthen our Student Unions - instead of having Potterrow and Teviot competing for the same customers on a Friday night, we should offer two different options. This would also lead to the phasing out of EUSA wide drinks policies and allow each Union to focus on the needs and preferences of their own customers.

I also want to boost Fridays up at KB, providing science students based around there with viable alternatives. Furthermore, I would like to see KBH become more widely utilised every night making it a genuine fourth union, instead of a poor relation.

Whilst nighttime activities may be important from a social perspective, it is the daytime operations that are the lifeblood of our unions. I want to see the Unions becoming a place where people want to go and eat during the day - a first choice and not an afterthought. I would also like to see more areas where people can bring in their own food and eat it in peace. The Unions should be there to serve the student body, not to drive it away.

Those that know me will tell you that I will make my voice heard, and I will not sit idly by in silence if I feel something can be done. However, I am also approachable and will listen to suggestions from those that run the Unions, and from those that use them.

VPS is about serving the student body.
