Lesson 3:  Who Do you Say That I am?

What the Resurrection Says About Christ and Other Religions

 

I.  Titles of Jesus: 

            A. Christ: Anointed One. Deliverer of heavenly origin (Mt 26:63) ushering in kingdom of God   

            B. Son of God: Denotes equality and oneness with God (Jn 5:18)

            C. Son of Man: Background Dn 7:13-14. One of heavenly origin with eternal rule over the world.

            D. Lord: Context determines usage/Septuagint uses kurios to translate YHWH; NT applies to Jesus

            E. The Good Shepherd: Effectively calls, saves, and preserves His sheep (Jn 10:14-16,26-30)

F. The Alpha & Omega: Sovereign over all of history and creation (Rev 1:8; 22:12; Dn 4:34-35)          

 

II.  Offices of Jesus: Our Mediator (Heb 1:1-3)

            A. Prophet: Reveals truth/will of God concerning salvation/edification (Jn 1:18,15:15; Hb 1:1-2)

B. Priest: Perfect sacrifice for sins/leads us to God’s presence/makes intercession (Hb 2:17, 7:25)

C. King: Rules and reigns/powerfully orders all things for His glory (Lk 1:33; Isa 9:6-7; Psalm 2)          

            -- Calls out of the world a people unto Himself (1 Pet 2:9-10)

 

III.  Fully God

            A. The Testimony of Scripture: His preexistence (Jn 1:1); the Godhead (Mt 3:16-17)

            B. The Testimony of Christ:  “I AM” (Jn 8:58; Ex 3:14)

            C. Divine Attributes:

1. Omnipresent (Mt 18:20; 28:20)

2. Omniscient (Jn 6:64; 21:17; Mt 9:4)

3. Omnipotent (Mt 8:26-27 – calmed the storm; Jn 11:43-44 – raised the dead)

            D. Divine Offices: 

1. Creator (Jn 1:3; Col 1:16)

2. Sustainer (Col 1:17)

            E. Divine Prerogatives (a prior or exclusive right or privilege especially as related to rank)

                        1. Forgives Sin (Mk 2:5-12)

                        2. Receives Worship (Mt 28:17; Rev 5:11-14)

                       

IV.  Fully Man: “Remaining what He was; He became what He was not.”

            A. Became Flesh (Jn 1:14; Phil 2:6-9)

            B. Human Attributes

                             1. Human Body (born: Lk 2:7, grew: Lk 2:40; wearied: Jn 4:6; died: Lk 23:46)

                             2. Human Mind (increased in learning: Lk 2:52; limited knowledge: Mk 13:32)

                             3. Human Emotions (anger: Mt 21:12; wept: Jn 11:35; rejoiced: Lk 10:21)

            C. The Perfect Man

                                  1. The Second Adam (Rom 5:12–21)

2. Sinless (Hb 4:15, 7:26; 2 Cr 5:21)

 

V.  One Person, Two Natures: The Infinite God-Man (Col 2:9)

            A. Council of Chalcedon, 451 AD: hypostatic union: natures united not mingled/divided/separated

            B. Only the God-Man Could be Our Savior

                        1. Fully Man to represent us to God (Hb 2:17)

2. Fully God to represent God to us and to be the Savior (Isa 60:16; Jonah 2:9)

            C. Forever God-Man: Jesus will forever retain His human nature and resurrected body (Rev 1:13)

 

VI.  Other Religions

Why is Jesus the only way?  Because Jesus is the only God!  Jesus validated His message, proved His identity, and disqualified all others through the historical fact of His Bodily Resurrection.
