Brunei Shell Petroleum (Operating Company of Shell International (Exploration & Production) in Brunei Darussalam, Borneo) - August 1995 to August 2000

Initially as a Senior DBA/Systems Engineer and currently as Service Manager/Team Leader for Oracle and Technical Services, I provide a lead role in Oracle database administration and UNIX System Administration to a Petro-technical and non-technical user community of about 3000 users using about 120 UNIX (AIX/HP-UX/Solaris) servers and workstations. Service Management responsibilities include tech-team leading and supervision (3 subordinates), setting and maintaining service levels via pro-active action as well as ongoing support, assist IT management in drawing up and implementing quarterly plans and targets, provide charge-back figures, capacity planning and asset usage, maintain service documentation, plan staff training, provide staff evaluation, etc. This is done using accepted IT Service Delivery Standards based on ITIL (see http://www.itil.co.uk)

Contained staffing and service levels in spite of explosive growth in servers and databases (12 databases in Aug '95 grew to 70 databases by April 2000). As the lead DBA, I implement, maintain and tune these Oracle instances, while actively pursuing migration to later versions of Oracle and the Operating Systems. This is being achieved by introduction of automated system and database monitoring tools such as HP OpenView / Operations Centre and Oracle Enterprise Manager as well as home grown scripts and tools.
