Syrupin, April 2002
Every spring, the girls and I head out into the sugarbush (also known as my front yard) to gather the maple sap and make the syrup.  This year, we got over three gallons of the sweet stuff, not too bad for 8 trees!  Anyway, here's some photos of our maple syrupin adventures...
Laura Loo checking for sap Alletta filling up the sap bucket
Here are my little helpers in the sugarbush.  Laura Loo was much more keen on drinking the sap and finding the "sapsickles".  Alletta liked collecting the sap and moving it out to the boiling area.
Back deck sugarhouse
Here are my two sap boiling setups.  On days when it's windy, I have to boil on the back deck using propane (the fire department sez so).  However, when the ground is damp and it's not windy, then I can use the back fire pit.  I like to boil two 18 gallon tubs at a time, much quicker than the propane setup.
Snow Squall Almost done!
This was kinda neat, I caught a snowsquall on film.  The day was sunny one minute and snowing like crazy the next.  Almost done!  This is a typical output for a weeks collection.  When the temp hits 219 and the hydrometer says 59 BRIX, then according to the USDA, it's syrup!  I got about a gallon on this burn.
