Mancamp Ice-out Apr 19th & 20th 2003
I went up to the mancamp solo on the weekend of April 19th and 20th to hopefully get the water running, no such luck, the poly-pipe supply line was still frozen.  However, while I was up there I managed to get the telescope out on Saturday night, heard the lockepondness monster, and watched the ice out as well as the loons moving in as soon as there was a hole in the ice.  Here are the pictures.

Here's some pictures from saturday afternoon, the melting had begun, but not in earnest.  The temps reached 65 degrees, but the only parts of the lake without ice was right there by the dock and the far north end of the lake.

By sunday morning, the sun had melted enough ice to open up the ice on the far side (west) of the lake, very shortly, the loons would move in.  I was amazed at how quickly all this had happened.
The Loons

As soon as the ice had opened, the loons moved in to start thinning out the population of sunfish.  They were VERY busy on sunday morning but very playful on sunday afternoon.  The photo on the right was a closeup taken with my telescope from about 1/4 of a mile away.
The iceout almost complete Iceout almost done
Around 4:40pm sunday afternoon I started hearing rushing water, I looked up and the remaining ice flow that was locked to the eastern shore had let go and was free floating.  Unfortunately, I had to leave before the ice out was complete, but got to see about 90% of the process.
